UPGREEN Vietnam

Reviving Plastic Waste into Sustainable Cultural Materials and Products.

UPGREEN Vietnam was established in 2023, born from the deep concern of its Founder, Ha Phan Kim Nguyet, who recognized two types of values in need of redefinition: Forgotten Materials (plastic waste) and Eroding Cultural Values (traditional arts). The idea around plastic waste originated from witnessing large amounts of floating plastic waste while fishing with local fishermen, especially low-value, hard-to-recycle plastics such as multilayer packaging and fishing nets, which are commonly burned, buried, or dumped directly into the environment. At the same time, the growing ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) trend in Vietnam is encouraging corporations to shift toward sustainable operations (from office design to green corporate gifting). However, they lack aesthetic and transparent solutions to handle their own plastic waste. Meanwhile, traditional Vietnamese arts – a heritage rich in sophistication and cultural depth – are slowly being forgotten in modern consumer society.

UPGREEN Vietnam was founded with the aspiration to reconnect these two “forgotten materials” to create products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also carry the “memory of materials,” telling a story of rebirth in order to solve waste problems while preserving cultural heritage.

The primary goal of UPGREEN Vietnam is to become a pioneer in providing comprehensive, creative, and transparent Circular Solutions, supporting corporate ESG/Net Zero Carbon strategies. UPGREEN Vietnam does not simply recycle, but also revalue plastic waste, especially hard-to-recycle, low-value plastics, transforming them into new materials called GreenForm and high-end interior/decor products.

To bring this vision to life, UPGREEN integrates two key elements: Culture and Design. It serves as a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and modern recycled materials, resulting in products that are both aesthetically refined and rich in cultural identity, while also conveying a strong message of social responsibility. For B2B clients, UPGREEN offers an end-to-end solution: processing input plastic waste, designing and manufacturing customized products, and supporting ESG reporting transparency and product traceability through NFC/QR code technology.

Beyond environmental and business goals, UPGREEN Vietnam is committed to its Social and Community Mission. The organization aims to redefine human value and offering economic opportunities and dignity for individuals who are often overlooked, including waste collectors and traditional lacquer artisans. Simultaneously, UPGREEN raises public awareness through educational programs and green workshops, reinforcing its role in promoting more sustainable living and business practices in Vietnam.

Plastic pollution in Vietnam is extremely severe: the country disposes 1.8 - 3.27 million tons of plastic waste into the environment annually and ranks among the top 5 countries contributing the most plastic waste to the ocean (UNEP, 2018). Alarmingly, up to 90% of plastic waste is still treated through landfilling or incineration, while only 27% is recycled by traditional facilities. UPGREEN focuses on solving this “bottleneck” – low-value, hard-to-recycle plastics (such as multilayer packaging or PP plastics), which are often rejected by conventional recyclers and end up in the environment.

At the same time, increasing ESG pressure and Net Zero Carbon commitments are creating huge demand in the B2B market. Companies require transparent, traceable, and aesthetically appealing Circular Solutions to integrate into their operations. Meanwhile, traditional arts need more opportunities to reach society, both domestically and internationally. UPGREEN leverages this intersection of ESG demand and cultural artistry to elevate the value of recycled materials, while fulfilling its social mission: redefining human value, creating jobs, and empowering both waste - collecting communities and traditional artisans and artists.

UPGREEN’s Innovation Solution: GREENHUB - The green community

Recycling Collection and Sorting Stations
  • Waste collection: Waste from households, residential areas, offices, and businesses is collected and delivered to Greenhub collection and sorting stations
  • Sorting: At the stations, waste is separated into categories such as organic waste, recyclables, hazardous waste, and general waste. Sorting is organized into designated areas, as illustrated
  • Education and Awareness: Stations regularly organize educational activities to raise public awareness about the importance of waste sorting and environmental protection
Research and Development of Eco-Friendly Products
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturers to design and produce unique, creative, and environmentally friendly products
  • Apply Ecodesign methods to optimize sustainability, reusability, and recyclability of products
  • Offer ready-made products and support customers in creating customized solutions
