Today, "Finishing – Surface finishing" is regarded as the golden key that opens many opportunities for Vietnamese wood manufacturing businesses to increase both production volume and value in domestic and export markets. However, beyond aesthetic requirements, consumers are increasingly concerned about factors affecting health. Consequently, the trend of using safe coatings for wooden products has attracted growing attention from furniture companies.

In export wood product markets (the United States, the EU, Japan—with annual sales worth billions of dollars), buyers and major global corporations are increasingly seeking products and manufacturing technologies that protect health and contribute to reducing pollution. The trend towards using water-based coatings has become unstoppable.

At the same time, in the domestic market, alongside the concept of "Green Construction", the construction industry and interior products have also begun adopting the concept of "Green Coatings"—water-based coatings. Green coating standards are assessed based on the formaldehyde and VOC content of coatings and adhesives in products, which must be below 10 or even zero, to meet the expectations of informed consumers, particularly in the mid-range and premium interior and exterior furnishing segments.

Recognising this trend, Sao Viet Nam Joint Stock Company launched G8 Green Safe Water-Based Wood Coating in 2018 for interior wooden furniture and export handicraft products. G8 Green Safe Water-Based Wood Coating.

G8 Green Safe Water-Based Wood Coating – Clean Coating for Green Interiors – is a safe, green, and environmentally friendly coating system that is non-toxic and protects the health of users.

The product is specially designed for indoor and outdoor wooden furniture, household wooden products, wooden children's toys, bamboo and rattan products, lacquerware, and handicrafts. The coating system meets safety standards for export products and is trusted in the EU and United States markets.

The product offers outstanding advantages, such as excellent coating film flexibility, effective crack resistance, high adhesion, high coverage, fast drying, resistance to mould and resin tannins, low VOC content, no odour, and no toxic substances.

Objective

Recognising the trend towards "green" interiors that are environmentally friendly, safe for health, and resource-efficient, Sao Viet Nam Joint Stock Company launched G8 Green Safe Water-Based Wood Coating for wooden furniture and export handicraft products.

G8 Green Safe Coating is not only a key driver for the development of export wooden products and handicrafts, but also a pioneering product in shifting practices within traditional craft villages and Vietnamese furniture manufacturers from solvent-based coatings to environmentally friendly, safe water-based coatings that protect the health of coating workers, consumers, and the wider community. G8 Green Safe Coating will contribute to partially or fully replacing conventional coatings in Vietnam's wood finishing industry in the future.

Implementation Process – Scope

Organised the launch seminar for G8 Green Safe Water-Based Wood Coating in Cat Dang, Nam Dinh on 25 September 2019.

Promotional programmes boosted sales with high percentage discounts.

Conducted free product trials at manufacturing workshops so users could experience the product's quality during the initial launch period, with an average of 4–5 workshops each month.

Currently, G8 Green coating is trusted and used by Cat Dang Craft Village in Nam Dinh and exported to Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, etc., with more than 80% market share among workshops using the product. 

G8 Green coating has achieved many remarkable results

More than 1,000,000 products sold since 2016.

More than 300 distributors and dealers, primarily traditional craft villages purchasing directly from the company (accounting for 30% of the national water-based coating market).

More than 80% of workshops producing bamboo and rattan products for export from traditional craft villages use G8 Green coating, with products accepted and favoured by the strictest, most demanding markets such as Germany, the United States, and Japan, including even products related to for food contact.
