Canvas incident

Canvas incident

RMIT has been notified of a cyber incident impacting the Canvas learning management system. Instructure, the vendor of Canvas, has confirmed that RMIT data has been impacted.

Last updated: 1pm, Monday 11 May

Access to Canvas has been restored for students and staff, meaning students have full access to learning activities and resources.  All classes and learning activities will return as per normal from tomorrow Tuesday 12 May

What this means for students

Students can use the platform safely and securely.

As previously communicated, all students who have assessment tasks due between Friday 8 May and Friday 15 May, will have a new assessment deadline of 11:59pm Friday 15 May unless your Course Coordinator or Program Manager has emailed your RMIT student inbox with alternative advice and direction. There is no change to this advice.

For SEUP, please follow the more specific set of instructions on assessments and deadlines provided by your teachers.

Please continue to check your RMIT inbox regularly for updates.

Students are encouraged to stay alert to unusual activity and continue to practice good cybersecurity. This includes:

  • Be hypervigilant of phishing emails
  • Don’t click on any links without checking they are safe or from a trusted sender
  • Screen phone calls from unknown numbers
  • Most importantly, do not submit any personal information to strangers.

Some practical tips are available on the Cyber safety webpage and the Scams targeting students webpage.
