5 Fun facts you may not know about Pride Week at RMIT

At its core, Pride is a global movement centred on equality, inclusion and human dignity, with its modern history connected to important milestones such as the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City.

In Vietnam, Pride has also grown into a long-standing community movement. The journey began with the first Viet Pride event in Hanoi in 2012, marking the beginning of an annual celebration of LGBTQ+ visibility, inclusion and community.

At RMIT Vietnam, Pride Week is an important annual event that puts the university’s commitment to inclusion into action. It creates opportunities for students and staff to celebrate diversity, raise awareness of inclusion and share stories that bring the community together.

People might usually associate Pride with June, but here’s a fun fact: Pride celebrations don’t have to take place in June!

While June is widely recognised as Pride Month because of its connection to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, communities around the world celebrate Pride at different times of the year depending on seasons or traditions. 

At RMIT Vietnam, Pride Week takes place in August, around Week 9 of the semester. The timing connects with RMIT Melbourne’s ‘Wear It Purple Day’, an initiative that encourages people to show support for LGBTQ+ young people by wearing purple and promoting inclusion.

So, while June might be Pride Month for many communities, August is Pride time at RMIT Vietnam!

Did you know that Pride Week has been celebrated at RMIT Vietnam since 2019?

2026 marks six years of Pride Week at RMIT Vietnam with six years of creating opportunities to celebrate diversity and recognise the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to the RMIT community.

Over the years, Pride Week has continued to bring students and staff together through activities, conversations and creative initiatives, creating more opportunities to connect, learn and show support.

Since 2019, Pride Week has continued to be an important part of RMIT Vietnam’s commitment to fostering an inclusive campus community.

Pride Week at RMIT is not organised by just one group of staff. It is a student-led initiative that brings together student clubs, student representatives and staff to create a celebration for the wider RMIT community.

This year, Pride Week is organised in collaboration with RMIT Pride Club, RMIT Queer and Alliance Club, Student Council and other members of the RMIT community. Together, these student-led groups contribute ideas, activities and spaces for students and staff to connect, learn and celebrate diversity.

This student-led approach makes Pride Week more than an institutional event, it gives students an active role in shaping how inclusion is celebrated on campus.

This year, RMIT Vietnam celebrates Pride Week under the theme R-Riginal, highlighting the idea that everyone has their own identity, story and way of expressing themselves. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or want to show your support as an ally, there are plenty of ways to get involved across the Saigon South and Hanoi campuses.

One simple way to show your support is through Wear It Purple. Put on your favourite purple outfit on the designated campaign day to show visible support and solidarity with LGBTQIA+ young people.

Words can also be a powerful way to show Pride. Through Letter of Pride, students and staff can share a message of support, appreciation or celebration with someone they care about or the wider LGBTQ+ community at RMIT.

Throughout Pride Week, students and staff can also join a range of student-led workshops and interactive activities across both campuses. These activities provide opportunities to connect, learn and celebrate inclusion together.

Ultimately, allyship is about turning inclusion into everyday action. Pride Week is an opportunity for the RMIT community to celebrate diversity and help create a campus where everyone feels respected, supported and free to be themselves.
