From idea to experience: Designing the Career Roadmap game

From idea to experience: Designing the Career Roadmap game

Developed by the Career Ready Hub in collaboration with RMIT students, the Career Roadmap Game is an interactive tool that helps students explore themselves and discover personalised career pathways.

Career exploration can often feel overwhelming for students, especially in a rapidly evolving job market. While many resources are available, they are often static and lack personalization, making it difficult for students to see how different paths align with their own strengths and interests. The Career Roadmap Game was created to address this gap, transforming career exploration into an engaging, interactive experience that guides students toward a clearer and more personalised direction.

Identifying the problem

The project began with a simple but important question: how might we make career exploration more engaging and relevant for students?

Through initial observations and discussions, it became clear that many students feel uncertain about their future, struggle to identify their strengths, and often lack motivation to engage with traditional career tools. These insights highlighted the need for a solution that is not only informative but also interactive, accessible, and tailored to individual users.

Shaping the experience

To create a structured yet engaging experience, the game was designed around a step-by-step self-assessment and exploration process.

Students begin by answering nine yes-or-no questions to assess their readiness across different stages, receiving a percentage score that helps them quickly understand where they stand. They can then choose to explore targeted activities to improve their readiness, selecting up to three per stage based on their interests. These choices shape the final output, as the game generates a personalised Career Roadmap, making the experience both reflective and actionable.

This approach ensures that the experience is not only reflective but also actionable, guiding students toward meaningful next steps.

How we brought the game to life

The development of the Career Roadmap Game followed an iterative, user-centered design process. It began with understanding students’ pain points, including their uncertainty about career direction, difficulty identifying strengths, and low engagement with traditional career tools. These insights helped define the core problem and guided the direction of the solution.

User journey mapping and initial game flow

Based on this understanding, an initial user flow was created to map out the overall experience, from entering the game to receiving a personalised Career Roadmap. Early ideas were tested through low-fidelity paper prototypes, allowing for quick validation of the structure and interaction without investing heavily in visuals or development. This step made it easier to identify gaps, refine the sequence of steps, and improve clarity.

Once the core experience was defined, the design was translated into digital mockups in Figma, where the interface and visual elements were developed in greater detail. These mockups were then shared with users through testing forms to gather feedback on clarity, usability, and overall experience.

Based on this feedback, the design was refined and adjusted before moving into development. The game was then coded into a working product, transforming the concept into a real, interactive experience. Even after the game was functional, the process continued with further improvements, particularly in refining the wording and instructions to ensure clarity and engagement.

This iterative cycle of testing, feedback, and refinement continued until the experience was ready to launch. By continuously adjusting and improving each stage, the final product became more intuitive, user-friendly, and aligned with students’ needs.

I would definitely try these services because they seem helpful and relevant to my career development. The tool gives clear suggestions and helps me understand what steps I can take to improve.

Official launch for students

The Career Roadmap Game was officially launched to students, marking the transition from development to real-world use. The launch aimed to introduce the experience in an accessible and engaging way, encouraging students to explore the game and discover their Career Roadmap.

Following the launch, user testing was conducted with participating students to evaluate the effectiveness of the experience in a real context. Feedback was collected through surveys, focusing on usability, engagement, and the perceived value of the personalised roadmap.

The results were highly positive. Students found the game easy to navigate, engaging, and helpful in reflecting on their strengths and career direction. Many also appreciated the personalised nature of the Career Roadmap, highlighting its relevance and practical value. These insights validated the design approach and demonstrated the potential of the game as a meaningful tool to support students in their career exploration journey.

Conclusion

The Career Roadmap Game demonstrates how career exploration can be transformed into an engaging and personalised experience. By combining interactive elements with meaningful insights, the project supports students in better understanding their strengths and taking clearer steps toward their future. From initial research to launch and real user feedback, the process highlights the value of iterative design in creating solutions that are both practical and impactful.
