Why understanding a job description matters

Navigating the job market can be challenging, especially for students entering the professional world for the first time. When searching for a suitable job, a job description (JD) serves as your first look at the position. By carefully understanding the details and requirements outlined in the JD, you can assess whether the job is a good match for you. This includes tasks, skills, and requirements needed for the role.

Your understanding of a JD will help you find important keywords and related experiences to include in your tailored CV. Nowadays, according to a Jobvite Recruiter Nation Report, 75% of recruiters use Applicant Tracking Systems – a software that helps employers sort CVs based on specific keywords that match the JD. Including these keywords will increase the chance that your CV passes initial screenings.

Using VAL to decode the job description

One useful tool you can use to assist with this step is VAL - RMIT’s generative artificial intelligence virtual learning assistant.

Making the most of your university experience
