Over the last decade, the Digital Media Program at RMIT Vietnam became a space where students, academics staff, and industry professionals converge to redefine the frontiers of digital art and design.
This celebration marks an opportunity to reflect on the nature of digital transformation. Beneath the binary foundation of ones and zeros, digital existence discovers a deep desire to transcend duality itself—the quest to reach the non-dual digit that lies beyond cycles of on and off, presence and absence, life and death, past and future.
Beyond 1 & 0 is a curated showcase that features a spectrum of digital media. Testing the limits of digital existence, the exhibition spans across experimental imaging, interdisciplinary animation, investigative interaction, and transcendental sound. It challenges the audience to reflect on and contemplate a path that leads beyond binary beliefs and dualistic oppositions.

The ‘Beyond 1&0’ opening event - celebrating past achievements and looking ahead to the future of digital media education and industry collaboration.
The Digital Media 10-year celebration kicked off with an inspiring evening of creativity and connection. The event welcomed RMIT leaders to reflect on the program’s journey and future in digital media education and industry collaboration. The highlight was an electrifying live showcase by lecturers Dr. Renick Bell and Giang Nguyen Hoang (giang.it), who captivated the audience with generative visuals and immersive soundscapes.
The opening performance by Dr Renick Bell and Nguyen Hoang Giang, as known as "giang.it", for "Beyond 1 & 0" epitomises the spirit of exploration that defines the Digital Media Program's decade-long journey at RMIT Vietnam. Engaging deeply with the event's theme, the performance invites viewers to reflect on the nature of generative media and AI. Bell and Giang developed and tested a new workflow for this performance, blending experimental audio and visual artistry to push the boundaries of conventional expression. That included sketches of a new work in progress called Bất Động Sản (Immobiliare).
Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the RMIT Vietnam Digital Media Program, this short documentary reflects on the essence of digital media and the importance of teaching digital art and design in the Asia-Pacific region. Showcasing inspiring works by students and academics, it highlights the ambition to transcend the binary – to go beyond 1 and 0 – while honoring a decade of innovation and excellence in creative education.
Beyond 1&0: A Poem is a poetic contemplation of digital beyondness. Paired with audio-visual recordings of the interactive installation ‘Reverence of the Wind,’ the work intertwines Vietnamese speech and English text to challenge binary thinking and dualistic opinions.
Nguyen Hoang Giang and Dr Renick Bell are the talented artists behind the captivating live VJ performance in the ‘Beyond 1&0’ opening event.
Nguyen Yen Han is an Academic Administration Officer at the School of Communication & Design. Behind the scenes, Yen Han ensures smooth management of programs like Digital Media, helping the team and students achieve excellence.
Dr Hellmut Monz is a university educator and a universe philosopher. As a Senior Lecturer and Interim Associate Program Manager overseeing Interaction and Sound, Hellmut has been an integral part of the Digital Media program for over five years.
Currently, Christian serves as one of the Interim Associate Program Managers, overseeing the Imaging and Animation pathway. His dedication to preparing students for the workplace and inspiring them through his craft makes him an integral part of the Digital Media journey.
