Discover Val’s latest features for study

With Val's latest features, now you can create RMIT presentation packs, reuse trusted reference material, and convert scanned PDFs or image-only documents into searchable text.  

These updates are designed to make everyday study tasks simpler, while keeping safety, trust and responsible use at the centre. 

As Val continues to evolve, RMIT is exploring more ways for students, educators and researchers to use AI safely and responsibly across study, teaching and research. 

Future updates will continue to focus on making Val easier to use in the tools and study contexts where it can add value. 

Val’s latest updates can help students bring files into conversations more easily, work with scanned or image-based documents, and keep track of changes to Personas over time. 

• OneDrive file picker: Browse and attach files directly from OneDrive within Val, reducing downloads, duplicate files, and manual steps. 
• Text extraction from scanned documents: Val can now use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to convert text in scanned PDFs and image-only documents into searchable text. This can help when you are working with readings, notes, forms, or other image-based study materials. 
• Version history for Personas: Track changes you have made to your Personas over time. Compare versions, review updates, and roll back if needed, while keeping a clear record to support responsible AI use. Available to staff and students. 

Val also includes features that can help you explore ideas, find information and personalise how you use AI, including: 

• Access to a range of AI models and Personas to support different study tasks. 
• Web search, which can help bring in up-to-date information alongside Val’s existing knowledge. 
• The option to create and share your own Personas, so you can tailor Val to the way you study. 

Open Val to explore these new features. 

As with any AI tool, use Val thoughtfully, check outputs carefully, and follow RMIT’s guidance on responsible AI use.
