Mark James

Graphic Designer, Researcher & Educator

Mark James is a UK-based educator and designer, currently leading the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme at the University of Plymouth. He is the founder of Studio Platitude, an independent design practice that collaborates with individuals, communities, cultural institutions, and brands.

With a focus on visual identity, typography, print, and website design, Studio Platitude brings thoughtful, research-driven solutions to every project—bridging creative expression with real-world impact.

In this talk, Mark will explore the vital role of research in graphic design. Drawing from practice-led approaches, he will examine how design can challenge established norms, propose alternative models, and push the boundaries of what graphic design can be. The session will consider how designers can balance creative exploration with the needs of industry and clients, offering insights into the evolving role of the designer today.
