RMIT students make an impact at ICAEW China & South-East Asia Business Challenge

RMIT students clinched second runner up as the Most Agile Team at a regional business case competition.

Now in its 8th year, The ICAEW China & South-East Asia Virtual Business Challenge organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) provides a platform to develop the next generation of business leaders helping students cultivate business acumen, practice critical thinking and analytical skills, while demonstrating leadership abilities.

The winners, Team Pyons, who previously won Grand Champion at the national round of ICAEW Vietnam Business Challenge earlier this year, represented Vietnam to compete against ten teams from China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Team Pyons consists of six School of Business & Management undergraduate students at RMIT Saigon South from the disciplines of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Digital Business, Digital Marketing, and Economics and Finance comprising of : Le Thuy Nhien, Tran Thanh Thong, Nguyen Vu Hai Binh, Huynh Nhat Dang, Nguyen Tan Dung, and Tran Minh Phuong.

Team Pyons from RMIT Saigon South clinched second runner up at the ICAEW China & South-East Asia Virtual Business Challenge 2022.

The team’s strong spirit of professionalism, ability to adapt, and flexibility helped them overcome time pressure and conquered the judges, who are regional experts in the fields of accounting, business, and finance.

Team member Nguyen Tan Dung said that the competition created opportunities and challenges, which are extremely important for his future career path.

“Despite timing pressure, the competition brought us the chance to gain invaluable experience and skills along with developing a professional network. By working with real-life situations in business, we receive shortcomings that require improvement, as well as deepening our knowledge in handling business problems,” Dung said.

RMIT lecturer Dr Majo George, who has rich experiences in mentoring students in business competitions at RMIT said: “It was the first time RMIT students took part in the competition conducted by ICAEW, so preparing the students for the competition was very challenging. In addition to providing guidance and mentorship, their teamwork is the key in winning the prize in the regional round. The team spent a lot of time practising and preparing, to clarify their doubts.”

“I would say that teamwork is the most vital factor. We spent a lot of time allocating the tasks and discussed the optimal approach so that everybody could operate at their best,” Le Thuy Nhien team member said.

ICAEW President Mr Will Brooks congratulated all finalist teams.

“I know that you are all of an exceptional standard to have been chosen to represent your countries to compete at this level – you are regarded as the very best in the region”, said Mr Brooks.

Along with Team Pyons, Team The Novice from RMIT Hanoi was among two Vietnamese teams, who also won the Grand Champion at the national round and attended the regional round.
