Inspired by the celebration of Earth Day 2008, students at the Saigon South campus of RMIT Vietnam established an Environment Club in June 2008. The club has a mission of raising awareness of environmental issues amongst students and the broader community.
In the short term, the club aims to encourage fellow students to gain an understanding and awareness of environmental issues such as pollution in Ho Chi Minh City as well as global environmental concerns. They believe that every contribution counts so they will provide information of how each individual can reduce, reuse, and recycle to make Earth a greener place.
In the long term, the club plans to host annual events to celebrate Earth Day. The celebration of Earth Day targets students of RMIT Vietnam and some high schools and universities in Ho Chi Minh City. It will be expanded to include the Hanoi campus.
The club members hope that these events will capture the attention of more and more people and help them acquire an increased knowledge about what they can do to help protect the environment. Earth Day will also provide an opportunity for green organisations to gather and share information of environmental trends.
With the slogan “Every Day is Earth Day,” the RMIT Vietnam Environment Club hopes to keep the spirit of Earth Day in everyone’s mind so that together they can create a more sustainable environment.
