RMIT Vietnam Chairman Professor Peter Coloe expressed his excitement at the opportunity to congratulate all graduates in person thanks to the recent decision of the Vietnamese Government in reopening the country for international tourism.

Professor Coloe praised the graduates for their outstanding commitment and many years of hard work in finally reaching the graduation.

“Take the time to reflect on this milestone, and your achievement, you should all feel incredibly proud,” Professor Coloe said.

He told them to take comfort knowing their experiences and the skills they have developed have prepared them to adapt and succeed in a changing world.

“With industry and enterprise embedded in everything we do, we’re confident that we’ve provided you with the skills, knowledge and connections you need to be successful - far beyond the walls of RMIT,” he said.

“We feel very privileged to play our part in inspiring, educating and nurturing Vietnam’s future leaders - and it is a responsibility we take very seriously.

“As Vietnam continues to evolve, so too has RMIT, supporting the country’s economic priorities and positive developments in the region for more than 20 years.”

Every year, RMIT University presents the Chairman’s Award to two undergraduate students from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi who embody everything the University would wish its graduates to exemplify - high academic achievement, social responsibility and service to the community.

This year’s Chairman’s Award at Saigon South campus went to Nguyen Thanh Thao who was an outstanding graduate of the Bachelor of Languages (double majors in Japanese & Translating and Interpreting) with a GPA of 3.96/4.0.

Thao was actively involved in many activities including organising the International Translation Day workshop, having an article published in a Japanese magazine, volunteering as an interpreter at the University’s events and being a tutor for the RMIT Student Academic Success team.

Sharing with her fellow graduates at the ceremonies, Thao said that COVID-19 has created unprecedented adversity that no one could have anticipated, “however, it has also made our graduating cohort unique because of our shared experiences, emotions and struggles”.

“Despite the bumpy ride over these last two years, we have finally crossed the finish line! I feel so proud to be among everyone here,” Thao said.

“Each of you has shown the qualities of a true fighter through great courage, remarkable resilience and untiring perseverance.”

Thao sent her sincere best wishes to all graduates and ask them to “uplift those around us to help them keep blossoming into their own version of beautiful lotus flowers, just like what the RMIT community has done for us”.

Another group of nearly 300 graduates from RMIT’s Hanoi campus will celebrate their graduation by the end of this week.

These two groups of graduates will join 16,500 members of the RMIT Vietnam alumni community who are already experiencing firsthand the benefit of an education that opens doors within Vietnam and around the world.

Professor Coloe encouraged graduates to draw on RMIT’s unique global footprint and more than 20 years of prestige in Vietnam.

“While today marks the end of one chapter for you, a new phase beckons with opportunities we may never have previously thought possible,” he said.
