RMIT wins national CFA Research Challenge

A team of five RMIT University students will proceed to the Asia-Pacific CFA Institute Research Challenge after winning the national competition.

Judged by industry experts, the CFA Research Challenge is an annual competition where university students studying business prepare equity research reports for an assigned company.

RMIT School of Business & Management students Tran Thi Khanh Van, Le Hoang Yen, Phan Thai Binh, Dang Huy Phong and Le Tran Anh Thu represented the University at the 2020 national competition, where they were challenged to produce a winning business valuation method for Hoa Phat Group.

Economics and Finance student Phan Thai Binh said the access to RMIT’s resources, like Thomson Reuters enhanced the team’s technical skills and financial comprehension.

“RMIT’s learning environment, industry connections and access to the state-of-the-art facilities provided tremendous support for us to expand our knowledge and create a competent solution,” Binh said.

Taking place over a three-month period, the competition left an “unforgettable” impression on Economics and Finance student Le Hoang Yen.

“The workload and stress were undeniably substantial, but we received constant encouragement from our teammates, lecturers and mentors,” Yen said.

"We were very proud to represent RMIT and are excited to represent Vietnam in the upcoming Asia-Pacific round.”

RMIT School of Business & Management lecturer and team mentor Dr Doan Bao Huy described the team’s strong skills and hard work as “impressive”.

“I applaud the conflict resolution skills shown by the team, and their ability to balance the existing university curriculum as well as obtain real-life industry experience,” Dr Huy said.

Economics and Finance student Le Tran Anh Thu said she was “thrilled” to compete in the national round: “After winning the national round, we all share a stronger commitment to the challenge and have gained extra knowledge through more industry collaborations that will hopefully lead to making Vietnam proud, as well as RMIT.”

RMIT University achieved second place in the 2019 competition.
