How the Master of AI can accelerate your career

For Tran Quy Hung, current student in RMIT’s Master of Artificial Intelligence, building a foundation of knowledge in AI and Machine Learning was of tantamount importance. Read on to discover how practical learning in RMIT’s classroom transformed Hung’s mindset and career.

Tran Quy Hung had almost given up hope of finding a good Artificial Intelligence postgraduate program to apply for.  After taking numerous AI short courses, none of which gave him much depth or insight, Hung states that he was lucky to discover RMIT’s Master of Artificial Intelligence when it first launched in Vietnam.

Hung says, “I deeply wanted to build a foundation of knowledge in AI and Machine Learning (ML), and there is a real and strong emphasis on practical experience in RMIT’s master programs. I had the opportunity to engage in several end-to-end AI and ML projects under the guidance of my lecturers. I took that learning and applied it right away into my work.”

Hung currently works at CIMB Bank Vietnam, where he began as an Assistant Manager, then Manager before being tasked to handle the bank's DevOps.  At the time, he was asked to deploy and maintain a machine-learning powered fraud detection tool on Google Vertex AI. The insights he gained from RMIT made it so that he was able to publish and implement the tool, helping serve numerous customers. Due to his proactive nature at work, Hung requested to establish a new department at CIMB dealing in AI and ML.

"Being a part of the Master of Artificial Intelligence has already paid off in dividends," Hung notes. "A whole new area has been opened up for me, with the opportunity to work in enterprise AI and ML.  I am now a Data Architect in Digital & Technology at CIMB Bank Vietnam.”

Another aspect of the program’s practical learning comes in the choice students have to make about which stream they will specialise in, either Research or Project.  Hung spoke with his CTO and will be implementing a customer profiling and fraud detection project at his work, while also using this as his study project next semester.

When asked which lecturers or class had the most impact thus far on him during the program, Hung is quick to single out Dr. Thuy Nguyen, one of RMIT's Senior Lecturers, who teaches the AI class. "Dr. Nguyen works really hard to make her classroom interesting and tries to answer all of our questions diligently. In terms of courses thus far, I would say Algorithms and Analysis, taught by Dr. Tri Dang, provided me with many fundamentals that have helped change my approach to work. I can now write code more efficiently and optimally, with a better understanding of how objects can be stored, organised and retrieved.”

Hung credits the program for helping him change his mind set and approach to studying. “I deal with people differently now.  My classmates are all from so many diverse backgrounds, I have been forced to listen more and consider their experiences, something I didn’t have to do before at work. In doing so, I can connect deeply with my fellow students, and I feel like I am gaining new friends. I’m thankful to the program, as I have been uplifted and I find the teaching and knowledge to be highly updated and relevant.”
