Tran Tu Quyen and her journey to becoming a strategic, inspiring leader with RMIT

From her MBA journey at RMIT, Tran Tu Quyen transformed from a young professional into a strategic leader.

When she began her Master of Business Administration (MBA) journey at RMIT with a prestigious scholarship, Tran Tu Quyen was already on a solid career trajectory. She started out as an in-house consultant, then became a young Team Lead in Business Consulting at PwC Vietnam, and was quickly promoted to Manager, Business Restructuring Services just before commencing her MBA. Quyen saw the MBA as a springboard to further develop herself so she could deliver greater value to Vietnamese and regional businesses.

At that point, her goals were clear: to sharpen problem-solving skills, close technical gaps in strategy and marketing, and stay continuously up to date with technology and innovation.

Two years later, now working as Manager, Business Advisory at Deloitte Vietnam and having completed all her courses to graduate this April, the biggest change Quyen recognises is not her ambition, but the way she thinks, leads and creates impact.

From linear, “start-with-the-end” thinking to flexible, creative problem-solving

In her early MBA days, Quyen described herself as a linear thinker.

“I always had to ‘begin with the end in mind’ and clearly picture what the solution would look like before I could start,” she says.

This way of thinking worked well for familiar restructuring and operational issues in consulting, but it left her feeling uncertain when facing new, ambiguous problems.

Throughout the program, Quyen’s thinking gradually expanded. In the Design Thinking for Business course, where students were asked to “forget what you already know” and approach problems without pre-set assumptions or biases, she steadily broadened her “thinking toolkit”. It helped her learn to accept the unknown and step into ambiguity with openness and intention, rather than anxiety.

At the same time, her decision-making became more strategic.

“Being exposed to comprehensive knowledge across strategy, finance, HR, marketing, operations and technology, combined with structured tools like the MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) approach, has helped me develop a more holistic perspective,” Quyen shares.

Now that she has built a solid conceptual and analytical foundation, Quyen no longer relies only on “what has worked before” when advising Vietnamese companies. She breaks problems down systematically, tests her reasoning against data and frameworks, and is able to make decisions even in areas where she doesn’t yet have many years of hands-on experience.

From high-potential consultant to strategic leader

When she started the MBA, Quyen was already a promising young manager. Her decisions in leading teams, solving problems and managing different personalities were largely based on experience and personal instinct. Through the MBA – particularly via subjects such as Leadership and Management – she has shifted from a “hands-on, instinctive manager” to a leader with a solid theoretical foundation, a more strategic leadership mindset, and a stronger ability to inspire her team.

Her sense of responsibility has also deepened. Quyen shares that the MBA has shaped her views on ethics, sustainability and responsible leadership in a very practical way. Ethics is no longer an abstract concept, but a guiding principle in how she makes decisions.

“Now that I’ve completed the MBA, the question I constantly ask myself is not only ‘How do we grow?’ but also ‘How do we grow responsibly and ethically?’”

Subjects such as Leadership and Management, Authentic Leadership and Personal Branding, and Leading AI and Workforce Transformation have reinforced her belief that leadership must always go hand in hand with ethical responsibility. This foundation has helped Quyen develop a leadership style that values integrity and long-term impact, rather than focusing solely on short-term results.

Looking back, Quyen sees her MBA at RMIT as a continuous transformation: she entered as a young, technically strong manager with big ambitions, and graduates as a strategic, agile and empowering leader – with sharper judgement, a stronger sense of responsibility and a clear mission: to accompany Vietnamese businesses on their journey towards meaningful and sustainable change.
