Young people and the transition from university life to work

Young people and the transition from university life to work

RMIT graduating students across different programs shared their fascinating journeys and aspirations ahead of their Graduation ceremonies in April 2022.

Nguyen Hoang Nam – looking to create an impact in the community

RMIT graduate Nguyen Hoang Nam went through a three-year journey of exploring, learning and reinventing after taking on the Economics and Finance program.

Nam had set his life goal to being able to contribute to the community and made step-by-step progress toward his goal by making an impact inside and outside the classroom.

Before being elected to the president of SIFE RMIT Hanoi, a student group that works on non-profit projects to make a difference in the communities, he gained experience through several positions in the group including being a Research and Development Team Leader, Event Leader and President Assistant.

“Starting from a new member to managing more than 80 members of SIFE after two years, my footprint left a great impression on my teammates,” Nam said.

Peaking Point, a nationwide social marketing contest creating positive influence on society’s perception of the LGBTQ+ community in Vietnam, led by Nam received “enthusiastic responses from university students across the country and the ‘Best Event of the Year 2021 Award’ from RMIT Student Life.”

“I am proud of the positivity the contest brings to this minority community, and proud to be able to make an impact on SIFE members: enabling them to overcome the challenges and achieve this huge success together,” Nam said.

Along with studying and taking on leadership roles, Nam also held the position of Program Tutor of RMIT Student Academic Success, where he supported many students to improve their academic performance.

Nam’s desire is to fuel the young generations with passion and believes “RMIT is the best place where students can discover their true potential. Students should always be ready to motivate others and be motivated by them, to fully enjoy the university journey.”

Vo Phuong Anh – a young girl who dares to take risks

Vo Phuong Anh, who will graduate from the RMIT Digital Marketing program, has the highest-grade points score in the program history. She is currently a Digital Marketing Specialist at a global technology company.

Having failed three dream universities before returning to Vietnam to study at RMIT, Phuong Anh feels thankful to this failure as she learned to be more resilient and developed her growth mindset.

Phuong Anh said RMIT had not only taught her how to learn but also the way to help others learn.

"The best part was that I found joy in learning, especially in the Digital Marketing course with client briefs.

“I was so glad to have the chance to be our team mentor and see my team praised by the client representatives in two program courses after lots of preparation, conflicts and arguments,” she said.

Studying while mentoring fellow students provided a great opportunity for her to improve leadership capabilities and interpersonal skills.

Phuong Anh also pushed herself out of her comfort zone by actively seeking challenges in national student contests and has won many awards together with her teams, including the National Champion prize of the Nielsen Case Competition 2019 and top 30 teams in Unilever Future Leadership League 2020.

Her experience at RMIT would not be complete without her contribution to creating a positive impact to the RMIT community where she studied.

“I had the opportunity to get involved in social activities such as the wellbeing campaign, community projects of the Green Generation Club and events in Student Council,” she added. “I appreciate how RMIT welcomes and supports new students’ initiatives, giving me a chance to positively impact the community and practice project management skills at the same time.”

She wishes for future generations “to make the most out of their RMIT experience and explore all the exciting opportunities. Take risks, be bold and I promise that results will follow”.

Phan Trung Kien – a moving forward leader

RMIT graduate Phan Trung Kien realised the value of developing his work-ready skills to enter the workforce after graduation.

Kien will graduate with a high distinction in the Bachelor of Languages, along with an impressive pack of professional skills and an IELTS 8.0 achiever under his belt.

Kien was among the young representatives from Vietnam to attend the ASEAN Youth Conference 2021 to brainstorm and create action plans for the region’s development.

When taking leadership roles in TEDxRMIT, he managed and developed the program to align with international TED guidelines, flexibly managed the program in a volatile period of the COVID-19 pandemic and professionally communicated with stakeholders.

“Joining TEDxRMIT 2021 changed me. I learned some, unlearned some, made some friends and lost some others. But in the end, this milestone creates who I am today, and I’m proud of it,” Kien added. “I believe that through good teamwork, problems can be solved and solutions can be found, no matter what the challenges are.”

He found ways to develop his invaluable skill set by volunteering in activities that benefit the greater good in his university life.

“As an enthusiastic and willing-to-try-and-learn person, I was always finding opportunities to support RMIT events and workshops, manage training and recruitment programs and help students get the most out of their time here.

"There's so much RMIT can offer if you just pluck up the courage and ask" - Kien's advice for new RMIT students.
