Members of the winning team, Black Sheep, Le Hoang Nam Anh, Nguyen Phan Minh Ngoc and Le Gia Thuan were thrilled with the chance to challenge themselves to explore creative solutions to improve business, society and individuals.

The team of Digital Marketing students initially made it to the top six, and then the top three, before climbing into first place with a disruptive and sustainable idea that involved hand sanitiser and sociable 18-35 year olds living in urban areas.

Black Sheep team member Le Gia Thuan said that thanks to the new format of the competition this year – the hackathon – her team had the opportunity to practice their resilience, logical thinking and independence.

“Each round taught us a different lesson,” Thuan said.

“While round one helped our team get used to developing an integrated marketing communications plan, round two trained us to withstand the pressure and improve our team spirit.

“The communication skills that we gained from the debate and Q&A round with the judges were super helpful for the workplace or any professional environment in the future.”

There were bumps in the road, another team member Nguyen Phan Minh Ngoc said, however “balancing between creativity and the realistic aspect of the idea – where it had to be disruptive yet easily do-able – was the most challenging obstacle”.

“Our ‘big idea’ definitely did not come on the spur of the moment, but from hours of thinking, arguing, consulting and building,” Ngoc said.

“During the 48-hour challenge, our team did not sleep for 30 hours straight in order to finish the case study on time.”

All team members agreed that the real-life experience they gained from working with many clients varying from F&B, FMCG, Health & Beauty or even Petroleum companies (as part of their Bachelor of Digital Marketing degree at RMIT) empowered them to win the national round.

“Knowledge from some courses, including Marketing Intelligence, Consumer Psychology and Behaviour, Social Media and Mobile Marketing, and Digital Marketing Communication, supported us the most,” Le Hoang Nam Anh shared.

The Black Sheep members encouraged their RMIT peers to join competitions to learn and to be better.

“You don’t have to wait until you’re good enough to join competitions,” Anh said.

“Like us, altogether, we acquired more than just the title ‘champion’.

“We gained knowledge, networking skills, durability, and most importantly, we gained a working team that never gave up.”
