RMIT to launch Bachelor of Digital Film and Video

RMIT University Vietnam launched a new Bachelor of Digital Film and Video program at its Saigon South campus on Sunday 20 October and welcomed the first intake of students in February 2020.

Digital Film and Video students will get to learn and practice in a media studio, which is fully equipped with cameras, lighting and vision mixing equipment. The Digital Film and Video program will equip students with specialised knowledge and skills to create content for a multitude of digital platforms. Successful graduates will be ready for exciting careers in film production, social media content development and digital production.

RMIT Vietnam has built a new media studio at its Saigon South campus which is fully equipped with cameras, lighting and vision mixing equipment to accommodate Bachelor of Digital Film and Video students. Students will also have access to RMIT’s editing suites and top-of-the-line computer labs.

RMIT Vietnam Head of Department, Communication Associate Professor Jerry Watkins explained that as Vietnam has the highest number of monthly active YouTuber users in the world, there is a high demand for qualified professionals to create and produce online content on platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

“Since many traditional film degrees don’t fully prepare students for the digital world of today and tomorrow, we created a degree that is all about preparing highly-trained graduates for the creative digital future,” Associate Professor Watkins shared.

The Digital Film and Video program is a three-year full-time course and consists of three streams. The first stream addresses building a story and includes screenwriting, directing and producing. The second stream will teach students how to create content, and will focus on camerawork, lighting and editing, while the third is about understanding narratives, their themes and genres.

RMIT degrees are distinguished by a strong emphasis on authentic assessment. Digital Film and Video students will learn through studio-based project work, workshops, individual and group based exercises, as well as teacher-led classes.

Students will have an opportunity to complete some of their degree at one of over 200 partner universities worldwide, and intern with big-name employers to help them make a smooth transition into the world of creative work. Perhaps the most innovative course in the curriculum is ‘Episodic Content: Web and Social Media’ in which students will produce an online series for distribution via a platform like YouTube or Vimeo.

Students will have an opportunity to complete some of their degree at one of over 200 partner universities worldwide which could take their study to Australia, the US or the UK. As with all RMIT Vietnam undergraduate programs, final year Digital Film and Video students will intern with big-name employers to help them make a smooth transition into the world of creative work.
