RMIT tourism program receives global accreditation

RMIT University Vietnam has become the first university in Vietnam to attain formal accreditation for its Bachelor of Tourism & Hospitality Management program from the Institute of Hospitality (United Kingdom).

The Institute of Hospitality is an internationally recognised professional management association for managers and aspiring managers, who are working and studying in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry. Its members are from over 100 countries around the world working in every sector of the industry.

Associate Professor Mathews Nkhoma, RMIT Vietnam Head of School of Business & Management, was thrilled to have received accreditation from one of the world’s most renowned institutes of tourism and hospitality.

“This recognition gives students, prospective students and parents the assurance that the RMIT Tourism & Hospitality Management credential is valued, internationally recognised, and connected to a global network of professionals,” Associate Professor Nkhoma said. “This guarantee of quality will also attract industry partners, strengthening our connections in the field and creating new opportunities for internships and work integrated learning, which better prepares our graduates for life and work.”

RMIT Vietnam also became the first university in Vietnam to have a Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) membership exclusively for students.

Dr Jackie Ong, Discipline Lead of the Tourism & Hospitality Management program at RMIT Vietnam, believed that PATA membership would bring more learning and networking opportunities for students.

“PATA is a very well-known association whose members are experts from tourism and hospitality related fields,” Dr Ong said. “They can train our students and provide them with industry expertise. The membership also allows our students to grow through this network when they go out for their internships.”

RMIT Vietnam’s three-year Bachelor of Tourism & Hospitality Management program enables graduates to pursue careers in administration and management in the tourism and hospitality industry. Through a range of rich delivery methods such as tutorial discussions, group work, problem-based learning, guest lecturers, case studies, class discussions, role-playing, simulations and shadowing managers, the program provides its students with the most relevant industry knowledge and supports them to develop their critical thinking and professional skills.

The University has established strong partnerships with local and overseas industry partners including InterContinental Hotels Group, Sheraton Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Alma Group Vietnam, and Buffalo Tours Vietnam. The memoranda of understanding that RMIT Vietnam has signed with Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake and Intercontinental Hanoi Landmark 72, and most recently with the Intercontinental Saigon, will enhance cooperation in a wide range of activities including management trainee programs, guest lectures, academic research, internships and employment, study tours, career expos, and Work-Integrated Learning projects.
