Joel Koopman (Texas A&M University, USA)
This workshop offers a practical roadmap for designing and executing high-quality experience-sampling (ESM) studies in organisations. Participants will learn how to capture employees’ day-to-day experiences, emotions, and behaviors using intensive, repeated measurement, and how to align sampling decisions (when, how often, and how long) with dynamic theory and real-world constraints. The session will walk through major design choices-such as temporal framing, scale anchors, and use of self- versus other-reports-and show how seemingly small decisions can meaningfully affect data quality, inference, and publication prospects. Emphasis will be placed on concrete examples and common pitfalls, equipping attendees to both conduct and critically evaluate ESM research in organisational settings.
Elle Yoon (Iowa State University, USA)
Management scholars are often concerned about empirical biases from endogeneity. When endogeneity is present, any model that does not account for the endogeneity will provide biased coefficient estimates. Scholars often attempt to address potential endogeneity in their research. However, there are many misunderstandings about endogeneity and scholars often implement questionable solutions. This PDW provides a learning opportunity about endogeneity and how to address it correctly. To do so, we explore the myths, legends, and facts about endogeneity. First, our expert panelists will each address a key issue in endogeneity. Topics include instrumental variable analysis, sensitivity analysis, and editor’s view of endogeneity in the field. Following their presentations, the panelists will answer questions from the audience, from which we will facilitate a scholarly conversation about their views on endogeneity. We will share specific statements, and have the panelists discuss whether the statements reflect a myth, legend, or fact, about endogeneity.
Simona Grande (Universitetet i Agder, Norway; Università di Torino, Italy; RMIT, Australia; Tec de Monterrey, Mexico)
This PDW offers a practical introduction to core ethnographic data collection techniques, with a focus on observation and participant observation as tools for studying social interactions and organisational practices in real-world settings. Participants will learn how to develop an ethnographic gaze, systematically observe social processes as they unfold, and engage with research contexts at varying levels of researcher involvement. The session will walk through key methodological choices, including what to attend to in observational research (e.g., interactions, routines, space, and material artifacts), how researcher presence shapes data generation, and the role of reflexivity in shaping what researchers see, record, and interpret in the field. Emphasis will be placed on experiential learning through live observation exercises, small-group reflection, and concrete examples of common challenges and pitfalls. The workshop is particularly geared toward doctoral students and junior scholars seeking to build strong foundations in ethnographic fieldwork, though participants at all career stages are welcome. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with practical tools to design and conduct ethnographic research in organisational and social environments. (After acceptance, participants will be asked to fill out a short introduction form.)
Betty Zhou (Texas A&M University, USA)
After acceptance, participants will be asked to submit a short working paper or proposal for feedback.
For registration, please complete the registration form available on the conference website to indicate your interest in participating. You will be asked to upload your CV (no additional preparation is required) and rank the four workshops in order of preference (e.g. Workshop 4, 1, 2, 3).
Rick Delbridge (Cardiff University, UK), Roy Suddaby (University of Victoria, Canada), and Diego M. Coraiola (University of Victoria, Canada). Rick and Roy serve as Associate Editors for the Academy of Management Collections, while Diego is the Incoming Editor-in-Chief for the Academy of Management Learning and Education.
We are pleased to announce that the Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE) has joined the Academy of Management Collections (AMC) for this collaborative workshop. This session explores the practice of alternative forms of academic writing designed to reach broader audiences and increase scholarly impact. Participants will explore new genres, learn practical techniques for developing a distinctive voice, and understand how these forms can enhance both public relevance and professional growth. This workshop aligns directly with the new essay format from the Academy of Management Collections, which is designed to capture timely and provocative ideas that advance management thinking in accessible and engaging ways, and the Essays and Dialogues from the Academy of Management Learning and Education.
Leveraging a roundtable format, participants will be introduced to forms of writing and scholarship other than the traditional research paper. The session will explore examples of alternative forms and identify publishing venues for essays and journalistic pieces. Through dedicated coaching, participants will practice techniques for elevating their voice and reader connection while reframing their scholarly expertise for public and practitioner audiences.
Interested participants should indicate their interest in this PDW on the conference registration form. During the registration process, please provide your CV, as this is a required step for attendance.
The workshop will be divided into two parts.
