This is RMIT’s highest position in the rankings since 2006, reflecting steady progress in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
For the first time in 15 years, RMIT has broken into the top 200 for its reputation among the international academic community, moving up 13 places to 189th globally.
The University has also strengthened its research standing, rising three places to 93rd globally for research citations per faculty.
RMIT remains the top university in Australia for attracting international academic talent, ranking 48th worldwide.
RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron welcomed the results, saying they reflected RMIT’s continued strength in applied education, research and global engagement.
“These results reinforce RMIT’s standing as a leading university of impact, focused on education that transforms lives and research that makes a meaningful contribution in the communities we exist to serve,” Professor Cameron said.
“For current and prospective students, this outcome highlights the value of an RMIT education, one that is practical, globally connected and shaped by the needs of industry and community.
“It also reflects the quality, relevance and reach of the work led by our academic staff, and the important partnerships that support research with real-world outcomes.”
RMIT is ranked 10th among Australian universities in the QS WUR scheme, which analyses 7,800 universities, of which about 1,500 are ranked.
RMIT’s results in the scheme have steadily improved over recent years, rising from 14th in Australia and 206th globally over the past five years.
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject released in March, RMIT ranked 1st in Australia for three subjects: Architecture/Built Environment, Art and Design, and Library & Information Management.
Globally, RMIT rose to 15th in Architecture/Built Environment and equal 19th in Art & Design, solidifying its position as Australia’s top institution for design and creative fields.
