Airport and transportation guide

Arrivals guide for IFFTI attendees regarding arrival at the airport and getting around town.

Welcome! You’ve arrived at the Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. This airport is the largest travel hub of Vietnam and as you can imagine, it’s going to be busy and a little chaotic. We’ve put together a guide to help you with the experience.

Immigration

  1. You will arrive at Terminal 2 of Tan Son Nhat Airport.
  2. Tan Son Nhat is a major airport located in the city, so the immigration procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your arrival time and the line at immigration check point.
  3. Prepare your visa documents (if applicable), passport to get through the immigration check point quicker.
  4. Fast-track immigration services are available through travel agencies or websites such as Klook or Agoda for a fee. You can check these websites or your local travel agency and book this service in advance to save time at the check point.

Transport from the airport

The airport is usually quite busy. Here are the best ways to get transport from the airport when you arrive.

Use your hotel’s transport services (recommended)

Most hotels offer airport transport services. We recommend booking through your hotel in advance for a smoother experience.

If you prefer to catch a taxi or to ride-hail, there are many options available.

Ride-hail (Grab car)

After you get through Immigration, head to the ground floor to exit the Terminal 2, then cross the street toward ride hailing station between pole number 5-7. (pictures below)

Important notes regarding taxis

  • The typical price for a ride from the airport downtown (District 1 and 3): about 120,000–200,000 VND (5-8 USD) and to RMIT Vietnam (District 7) about 250,000 – 350,000 VND (9 –15 USD), please note, 500,000 VND is too much.
  • Broken payment machines and meters: Before getting in, make sure to check the meter and credit card machine (if you intend to pay by credit card). Even when there's a flat rate for short distances, the meter should still show the starting rate.
  • Taxi look-a-likes: Many times, there will be look-a-like taxi brands or logos that resemble Mai Linh Group and Vinasun. Make sure to check the logo and brand carefully. Always prioritize calling the hotline to order a taxi.
  • Check the plate carefully before getting in.
  • If you notice anything suspicious, like the meter not moving or moving too quickly, ask the taxi to stop immediately.

Phone roaming and data

Use an e-sim app such as Saily or Airalo. You can also purchase e-sim via travel apps such as Klook and Agoda.

Please note that these will only provide a data plan and NOT a Vietnamese phone number.

If you prefer a phone number, physical SIM Cards may be preferable.

You will need your passport to purchase a SIM card, as phone numbers in Vietnam are registered to the owner.

Ask for a short-term SIM, with data, for tourists. You may request an e-sim if your phone model supports it

Prices vary depending on the data package

Locals typically spend 90,000 – 200,000 VND/month (3-8 USD) for a package with plenty of data.

Airport kiosks

Approach an airport kiosk upon arrival for convenience. The kiosks tend to be more expensive but grant you immediate access.

Physical stores

Purchase at reputable Vietnamese providers, these providers have physical store around the city.
