Learn about international study opportunities for students and practical ways parents can support their children throughout the study abroad journey.

For many parents, having their students participate in an exchange or transfer program is both a source of pride and a cause for concerns about which program best aligns with the student’s academic pathway, financial circumstances, the ability to adapt to a new environment and when and how both students and families should begin preparing for the experience. This article provides key information to help parents better understand the international opportunities available to students, while also offering practical suggestions on how families can effectively support their children throughout their study abroad journey.

Which Global Experience programs can RMIT Vietnam students join?

With a network of more than 200 partner universities across over 35 countries, RMIT Vietnam offers students a wide range of international learning opportunities through its exchange and transfer programs. These programs enable students to experience diverse academic environments, cultures, and teaching approaches around the world, while broadening their perspectives and building valuable global connections throughout their studies. To choose the most suitable program and pathway, parents and students can start by understanding the key differences between the Exchange Programs and the Transfer Program.

  • Exchange programs: These programs allow students to spend one or two semesters (six months to one year) studying at RMIT’s partner universities or at RMIT Australia, while continuing to pay tuition fees equivalent to those at RMIT Vietnam. Subjects completed during the exchange are generally credited towards their degree at RMIT Vietnam.
  • Transfer program: This program enables students to transfer to RMIT University and complete the remainder of their degree there. Upon transferring, students become RMIT Australia students and pay tuition fees in line with Australian campus requirements. Those who study in Australia for two years or more may also be eligible for post-study work opportunities through Australia's Post-Study Work Visa pathway after graduation.

Support available before and during the program

In addition to proactively exploring information through the university’s official channels, students can also take advantage of the following support services to help them plan and prepare effectively for their exchange or transfer journey.

  • One-on-one advising from the beginning: students can book individual consultations with the Global Experience Office to explore available exchange and transfer opportunities and receive personalised guidance.
  • Regular application guidance sessions help students understand the application process and requirements in detail, ensuring they can prepare and submit their applications on time.
  • Academic planning support helps students develop a study plan that aligns with their chosen pathway while ensuring they remain on track to complete their program on time. Students can contact Student Connect to receive guidance tailored to their program requirements.
  • Pre-departure briefing sessions: before students leave for their overseas program, RMIT Vietnam organises pre-departure sessions covering important information and preparations. These include a dedicated session for parents and families to help them support their student transition abroad.
  • Ongoing support throughout the overseas experience: while participating in an overseas program, students continue to have access to support from both the host institution and RMIT Vietnam. They can contact the Global Experience Office whenever they need advice, guidance, or assistance during their time abroad.

How can parents be alongside students during this journey?

A transfer or exchange journey is not only an important opportunity for students to grow and gain independence, but also a significant milestone for many families. To support students effectively and help them feel more confident and prepared as they begin life in a new environment, parents may consider the following suggestions:

  • Explore program information and study pathways together: Discussing study abroad opportunities as a family, including potential destinations, universities, tuition fees, living expenses, and other key considerations can help both parents and students better understand which options align with the student's academic goals and the family's circumstances. Through guidance, and open conversations, parents can encourage students to research their options more thoroughly and build the confidence needed to make informed decisions about the program that best suits their needs.
  • Encourage initiative and independence: Studying abroad provides students with an opportunity to adapt to new environments, develop life-management skills, and learn to make responsible decisions. These experiences help build resilience, perseverance, and confidence that will benefit them well beyond their international study experience. Through trust, encouragement, and appropriate guidance, families can support students in gradually developing the skills and independence needed to navigate this journey successfully.
  • Provide emotional support: Regular phone calls, words of encouragement, and simply being there to listen can offer meaningful support as students navigate challenges, pressure, or homesickness while studying abroad.
  • Update information and stay connected with the University: Behind every student's success is the ongoing support of their family. Keeping up to date with relevant information and maintaining regular communication with both students and the university can help parents provide informed and effective support throughout their child's study journey.

“Before joining the program, I was quite reserved and hesitant to step outside my comfort zone. When I learned about the exchange opportunity, I was keen on overseas study and saw it as a chance to challenge myself. Spending a year studying in both France and Australia allowed me to experience two different cultures and helped me become more confident and mature.” — Nguyen Thu Tra, Bachelor of Digital Marketing student, who participated in an exchange program at ESSCA School of Management (France) and RMIT Australia in 2023.

Global experience programs not only provide students with access to international learning opportunities, but also mark important milestones in their personal growth, independence, and holistic development. With support from the University and the trust and encouragement of their families, students are better equipped to step confidently into the global environment.
