A PhD journey empowered by RMIT’s support system and research community

Now a lecturer in The Business School, Dr Pham Thanh Hang describes her PhD journey as both demanding and deeply rewarding, made possible by the support she received at RMIT.

After more than a decade of working in a variety of roles, from founding an IELTS centre to teaching at university, Hang chose to pursue her PhD at RMIT Vietnam so she could balance her academic aspirations with family commitments while studying in an internationally recognised doctoral program without leaving Vietnam.

Looking back, what impressed Dr Pham most was RMIT’s well-structured doctoral program and its comprehensive support services for research candidates. These ranged from research methodology courses and extensive library resources, including specialist books, journals and academic publications, to dedicated staff who were always available to answer questions and guide candidates through the entire research process. She also had opportunities to deepen her expertise through practical workshops on research skills and tools, academic initiatives such as the 3 Minute Thesis competition, and a wide range of activities designed to connect and strengthen the research community.

Above all, however, the greatest value Dr Pham found came from the people around her. Her supervisors not only challenged her intellectually through thoughtful academic discussions and critical questions, but also gave her the confidence to explore her own research direction. Equally meaningful were the friendships she built with fellow PhD candidates from diverse countries, professions and backgrounds. Their willingness to share experiences, offer encouragement and grow together made an inherently challenging journey far more rewarding.

Having completed her PhD with research focusing on protean career orientation of Vietnamese Gen Z as they transition from university to the workforce, Dr Pham now teaches Human Resource Management at RMIT University, a career path that truly reflects her passion and sense of purpose.
