MOET and RMIT Vietnam promote excellence in online learning design

MOET and RMIT Vietnam bring together higher education leaders to advance online learning design in Vietnam.

Higher education leaders, policymakers and academics from across the country gathered at a workshop on "Online learning design: International experience and Vietnamese practice", organised by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in collaboration with RMIT University Vietnam.

Held at RMIT Vietnam's Saigon South campus, the event attracted 110 in-person participants and hundreds more joining online from over 350 locations across the country. It served as a forum for sharing international expertise, institutional experiences and practical approaches to designing high-quality online courses that improve accessibility, learner engagement and educational outcomes.

The workshop is part of ongoing collaboration between MOET and RMIT Vietnam to support the digitalisation of higher education and the implementation of national priorities on innovation, science and technology development, and digital transformation.

In his welcome remarks, Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside, Pro Vice-Chancellor and General Director of RMIT Vietnam, highlighted the importance of collaboration among universities, educators and policymakers in preparing learners for a rapidly evolving digital future.

"As higher education undergoes profound transformation worldwide, it is critical that institutions develop learning environments that are flexible, engaging and responsive to the needs of learners and industry," Professor Thompson-Whiteside said.

“Our collaboration with MOET is a valuable opportunity for RMIT Vietnam to share experiences in developing digital learning resources and open educational resources, designing online courses, and sharing effective educational models and solutions in digital learning environments.”

Professor Thompson-Whiteside said RMIT was committed to supporting Vietnam's digital transformation agenda through expertise in technology-enabled education, curriculum innovation and capacity building for educators.

He noted that RMIT's blended learning model goes beyond online content delivery. It creates interactive, media-rich, socially connected and scaffolded online environment that serves as a central hub for collaboration and exploration.

Professor Thompson-Whiteside also highlighted RMIT's extensive digital learning infrastructure, including access to more than 1.3 million e-books and journal articles, as well as initiatives such as the university's Community of Practice, which fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing among educators across Vietnam.

The workshop featured presentations from MOET, RMIT Vietnam and leading Vietnamese universities that have pioneered digital learning initiatives and online course development.

Representatives from the National Economics University (NEU), the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), Ho Chi Minh City Open University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) shared institutional experiences, lessons learned and practical insights from implementing online and blended learning models.

Associate Professor Dinh Tien Minh, Head of Marketing Department, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) emphasised that overcoming technological barriers and continuously upskilling are essential for educators.

“Today’s students are highly tech-savvy, so educators must be willing to immerse themselves in technology,” he said.

“Educators also need to experiment with and use multiple platforms, observe and encourage student interaction in online classes, and, most importantly, remain in control of the learning experience.”

Dr Nguyen Thi Van Huong, Deputy director of Digital transformation innovation, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), said that blended learning fosters innovation in teaching methods, enhances education quality, and supports the university’s comprehensive digital transformation across all areas of operation, contributing to sustainable development and meeting society’s growing demands.
