RMIT’s Community of Practice builds digital capacity in higher education

RMIT and universities in Vietnam are collaborating to meet the educational needs of learners in the digital age.

RMIT has established a Community of Practice (COP) with participation from a range of universities in Vietnam, aiming to discuss and share experiences in teaching and learning in the digital arena.

In 2023, RMIT’s COP held a series of workshops in online learning in the digital age for the Vietnamese higher education sector to build digital capacity.

The first workshop held in March, explored knowledge digital gaps, barriers and opportunities in emerging technologies, gaps in the workforce, and how higher education institutions can support this.

Over four months, participants from 11 local universities joined a series of workshops and shared their common areas for development including digital learning design, student engagement, uplifting the quality of lectures, processes and regulations for online teaching, and assessing student competencies.

This gave participants a holistic view of blended learning and exposure to different perspectives and approaches from their peers.

Ms Luong Thi Hong Gam from Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City was grateful for the opportunity.

“Thanks to COP, I have connected with colleagues from other universities and have learnt about how to run online learning sessions effectively. I can share this knowledge with my colleagues and apply it to improve my own work,” said Ms Gam.

RMIT Pro Vice-Chancellor and General Director, Professor Claire Macken was thrilled to see the COP committee going into its third year, after significant changes in scale and the participation of many new educational partners, including those championing sustainability in Vietnam.

“It is a testament to our commitment to demonstrate the strength of our relationship and highlight new and emerging areas of cooperation and collaboration as we celebrate our shared passions and our cultures,” Professor Macken said.

“At RMIT, we believe in our strategy of ‘Knowledge with Action – generating positive impact together’. Our shared success will be life-changing for individuals, for communities, and for generations to come. Our goal is to focus on using our knowledge, skills and capabilities to make a difference in the world – that's why we called it Knowledge with Action.”

Professor Macken said collaboration with our partners and stakeholders was one of the many ways RMIT could bring value to the communities we serve.

RMIT Dean of Students, Associate Professor Seng Kiat Kok said, “We have built bridges between institutions, creating connections and opportunities for academics and academic leaders. This has nurtured a rich exchange of knowledge, expertise, and cultural understanding, that has benefited both countries while also fostering a thriving global learning community.”

Participants also had a chance to discuss future initiatives and collaborations aimed at further elevating the quality of higher education in Vietnam and strengthening the ties between RMIT and Vietnamese universities.

These workshops continue the work RMIT initiated in 2020 with the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training, and Australian and Vietnamese higher education experts on digital learning.

This contribution has amplified the impact and influence of RMIT in delivering excellence in higher education and in blended learning, supporting the Vietnamese education sector in advancing digitally enhanced learning for the future.
