As a project that debuted in VFCD 2021, here/there returned after one year of arduous work to foster collaboration between young emerging artists in Vietnam and Australia’s artisans and designers. With an aim to promote contemporary design practice while also sustaining traditional forms of art and craft practice, the project opened opportunities for cultural, economic and knowledge exchange between makers and designers from the two countries.

Try “speaking” in collages

Have you ever been ‘eager’ to say something but didn’t have the words to express it, and even if you did, nobody was there to listen?

This was the situation that Vo Nguyen Anh Tu, the facilitator of the “Exploring ourselves through the language of collages” workshop – found himself in. At that moment, Tu sought collages to both confidently tell his story and “play” with images.

Befriend emotions workshop: it seemed like a talk, and it turned out…

… It turned out there was no stage and dividing line between the speakers and the participants. Instead, everyone was sitting in a circle, lying on the floor, drawing on the glass, walking around in slow motion, running fast like a crab, or walking and drawing at the same time comfortably following the guidance of the two facilitators.

Nguyen Minh Nam, one of the facilitators, emphasised that in the journey to make friends with your feelings, the most critical things are benevolence and an unjudgmental spirit for yourself.

Shift towards a future of sustainable and innovative designs

During the “Material Futures: experimental fabrication of bacterial cellulose as a potential biomaterial” workshop, presenters discussed and showcased examples of the ways different locally available ingredients such as fruits, teas and sugars are used to grow kombucha as a form of bacterial cellulose that can alter the tactility and other characteristics of new biomaterials.

“Experimenting with bacterial cellulose as a potential biomaterial develops alternatives to synthetic petroleum-based materials with much lower environmental impacts,” Associate Professor Donna Cleveland, Deputy Dean of School of Communication & Design, RMIT Vietnam, one of the two presenters, shared.

news-9-2000-art-enthusiasts-united-at-vietnam-festival-of-creativity-and-design-2022 Talk “What’s Left: From Trash to Art”

Designing is relatively synonymous with creating, however, at the talk “What’s Left: From Trash to Art,” designer Pham Thi Kieu Phuc introduced her way to make new products out of old materials. Having come up with the idea when she witnessed the rampant production of fast and tourist fashion in Hoi An, her team asked and took whatever fabrics the shops there gave them to “create” new clothes.

She believed that: “Design is not only a way of observing problems and bringing about change but also developing oneself and inner philosophy.

Creating art is a process of cognitive transformation, transforming the way we perceive and interact with our living environment.”

Redefine the future of design

VFCD 2022 ended in triumph for art lovers, but its impact on encouraging audiences to move forward to a sustainable future with innovative designs has remained. Creativity enables us to cope with change, and as the world changes ceaselessly, more creative solutions will be introduced at art playgrounds such as the annual VFCD.
