International attendees included the Australian Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce, leaders of global companies (including Siemens Australia and Festo Didactic Asia Pacific), RMIT University leaders, and representatives from the Australian Embassy in Hanoi.

The participants from Vietnam were top leaders and department heads of the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Information and Communication, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, academic institutions, and large corporations operating in Vietnam.

The roundtable aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation to support Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 transformation agenda by sharing experiences of the collaboration between Australia and Germany (the birthplace of Industry 4.0), showcasing best practice approaches to address the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Australia, and connecting the key stakeholders in Industry 4.0 (ie governments, industries, businesses).

Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy said that “in order to actively engage in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Vietnam needs to expand collaboration with strategic partners with advanced science and technology.”

“Vietnam and Australia have forged a strategic partnership since March 2018, and there is huge potential for cooperation between our two countries in the field of Industry 4.0. This strategy roundtable has kicked off an industry led discussion on Vietnam and Australia’s cooperation on the future of Industry 4.0 in Vietnam," he said.

“Going forward, we wish to promote strategic partnerships between government agencies, businesses, institutions, and universities from both countries, and establish an ongoing dialogue channel for cooperation."

RMIT University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (STEM College) and Vice President Digital Innovation, Professor Aleks Subic said that the strategic roundtable would no doubt facilitate greater collaboration between Vietnamese and Australian companies and government institutions.

“I look forward to bringing to this partnership our experience in establishing and operationalising the Australian network of Industry 4.0 Hubs and pilot programs in digital technologies that are already transforming the manufacturing sector at scale through partnerships between government, industry and academia,” Professor Subic said.

The roundtable is set to open up new cooperation initiatives and strategically connect Australian platforms with Industry 4.0 initiatives in Vietnam.

It has also created a basis for ongoing dialogue to connect, share experiences, and collaborate with a view to manage the challenges and opportunities of Industry 4.0, while ensuring that all parties benefit from a better future with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The industry linkages created are further expected to support increased trade and investment between the two countries, consistent with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership signed in November 2020.
