Stakeholders discuss internationalisation of Vietnamese businesses

Following on from the success of the RMIT Vietnam International Business Forum in November 2017, the School of Business & Management recently hosted a repeat event, Internationalisation of Vietnamese firms: What does it take?. Once again, the Forum attracted prominent business leaders, policy makers, experts and scholars, as well as a large audience eager to learn how the Vietnamese economy can maintain its record growth through the internationalisation of its companies, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Led by Dr Nguyen Quang Trung, Senior Lecturer, Discipline Lead, Department of Management, the Forum team from RMIT outlined some lessons from Asian Tiger economies, and identified common barriers and drivers for organisations seeking to expand into overseas markets. Representatives from well-known international and Vietnamese companies also shared their success stories.

As Government economic policy and agencies play a leading role in enabling internationalisation, Dr Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, Vice Director of HCMC Department of Industry and Trade, and Dr Vo Tri Thanh, Former Economic Advisor of the Prime Minister of Vietnam, also provided valuable insights during the Forum.

Dr Thanh said that Vietnamese enterprise is playing a key role in sustainable economic growth and has many opportunities for international economic integration thanks to new-generation Foreign Trade Agreements (FTAs) with profound commitments, as well as in getting ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution with the explosive growth of new technologies and the digital economy.

“For the past two decades, Vietnam has been one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and has become increasingly attractive for foreign investment. Understanding the domestic business, policy environment and international context are crucial for Vietnamese firms seeking to internationalise,” Dr Trung said.

“Therefore, we wanted to establish a forum to discuss vital international business themes in Vietnam, and to build a foundation for a prestigious annual forum on Vietnam’s economic integration and international business best practice.”

The event was warmly received by an audience of over three hundred people including corporate representatives, academics and students.

A similar event at RMIT’s Hanoi campus will be organised on 19 December 2018.
