RMIT alumni give back to the community

RMIT Vietnam alumni recently offered gifts and volunteered their time to support disadvantaged children at Truc Lam Bao Son, a pagoda 100km from Ho Chi Minh City.

Organised by RMIT Vietnam, A New Day professional social work group, and Overseas Alumni Vung Tau, the Mid-Autumn Festival charity event was an opportunity for the graduates to connect and work together to contribute to the community.

The volunteers had raised enough money to offer 350 giftsets to the children – some of whom were orphans living in the Pagoda, and others who lived in the surrounding community. The children received notebooks, milk, handbags, mini games, and of course mooncakes and lanterns for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.

Nguyen Minh Hai (left), a graduate of the RMIT Vietnam Master of Business Administration program, donated 400 lanterns. Ms Hai said she was motivated to join the event because of a strong sense of belonging to the community and a wish to be part of a group that contributes through a meaningful activity.

The participants donated time in addition to money. Ho Thai Binh, President of the Overseas Alumni in Vung Tau, worked with other volunteers to build bookshelves for the Pagoda.

RMIT Vietnam staff joined the alumni to help with volunteer activities.

Children were encouraged to join mini games and collect stamps which could be exchanged for small gifts such as pencils, rulers, sharpeners and candies.

The children sang Mid-Autumn Festival themed songs to end the special day.
