PhD Scholarship Presentation

Vo Ngoc Thao Nguyen, a Lecturer in Accounting at Eastern International University (Binh Duong Province), has won RMIT Vietnam’s first scholarship for women enrolling in its PhD program.

The scholarship covers the tuition fee of a standard three-year full-time research doctorate, worth more than 700,000,000 VND ($30,750).

Speaking at an International Women’s Day staff celebration, RMIT Vietnam President Professor Gael McDonald said she was thrilled to present the award to Ms Nguyen exactly one year after the doctoral scholarships for women were first announced.

“There are many scholarships given by the Vietnamese government, but they are mainly for people to go overseas to study,” Professor McDonald said.

“But this might be very hard for the doctoral candidates to do if they have a family, a job, and all the other things in life.

“That’s why we created this scholarship when we launched the PhD program.”

Ms Nguyen, who wanted to live near her family while earning a PhD at an international university, said she felt honoured to accept the scholarship.

“The scholarship is a stepping stone that helps me to further my career growth,” she said.

In her research proposal, Ms Nguyen said she will examine the level of bank management earnings in developing countries before and after International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) implementation, and how those levels are different from banks in developed countries. She published two papers on this topic last year.

“I hope my research will have realistic and meaningful contributions to society,” she said.

The scholarship is one of two that the University offers annually, starting this year, specifically for women.
