RMIT Design student to land place at prestigious New York design school

Nguyen Ngoc Tran has been accepted into the student exchange program at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York.

Having completed the fifth semester of her Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) degree, Tran applied through RMIT’s exchange program and expects to take up her place in the U.S in August.

“New York is a fascinating city which everyone would love to see once, and is a place where the impossible becomes possible,” Tran said. “Parsons School of Design is one of the top schools in its field, and I believe I can learn a lot from them.”

Her decision to apply to only one institution in which there is fierce competition for place, was a bold one. In some ways this also demonstrated how fearless and committed she was to achieving her goals.

“Tran is not afraid to experiment: to find novel ways to address problems. She also has a knack of finding interesting problems: a key attribute of any innovator. This is a strong sense of her own identity,” said Senior Educator Martin Constable, one of her lecturers from the School of Communication and Design.

It has not always been an easy path for Tran, as she had to show her determination and dedication to even begin her design studies. She had a love or drawing from a very young age, however her parents had something else in mind for her for a career.

“To prove to my parents that I was serious about studying design, I passed the national university entrance exam and got band 7.5 in IELTS,” Tran said. “After I fulfilled every requirement my parents set, they finally let me do what I wanted.”

“I want to be able to learn how to create works that improve people’s quality of life, to know deeply about the human condition and make a difference by solving more problems,” she added.

Tran said that for those who wanted to step out of their comfort zone and take chances to achieve their dreams, the key things to remember were, “practice makes perfect and always keep trying”.
