RMIT Vietnam launches PhD program and doctoral scholarships for women

RMIT Vietnam President Professor Gael McDonald announced the launch of the University’s PhD program and new scholarships at an event on 24 October 2016.

Professor McDonald said the University had been anticipating the day RMIT Vietnam would be able to offer international standard PhDs, and said it was great not only for RMIT as it adds to the University’s student offering – but also was significant for the country.

“PhDs signify a unique contribution to knowledge, in whichever area they focus on, whether it’s developing new economic models that save time and increase efficiency or in the development of innovations that save our environment,” she said.

“Whilst we hope to grow our PhD offerings significantly over the next few years, there will be three options on offer immediately in Business, in Management, and in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

“PhD candidates can choose to base themselves in Vietnam, with a co-supervisor also based here, but still be counted as an RMIT Melbourne Higher Degree Research student.

“We will provide doctoral candidates with the support of a group of experienced and trained research supervisors who will help them to develop the research skills and knowledge needed to maximise their potential.”

Professor McDonald also announced that two new scholarships would be fully funded by RMIT Vietnam.

“These two scholarships are specifically for women as we want to see more women in research, especially in fields like engineering where women’s participation in the labour force is low, and in business where senior leadership is led predominantly by men,” Professor McDonald said.

“We’re looking for talented women who already hold a master’s degree to apply and have an idea of something they’d like to research, something they are passionate about, and that is of value to Vietnam.”
