RMIT competition boosts high school students’ Tech Genius

Three students from Gia Dinh High school have won the best project team prize for creating a wall-climbing robot at RMIT Vietnam’s inaugural TechGenius 2016.

Bui Manh Gioi, Mai Ngoc Anh Duy and Do Minh Tri each received an award valued at 50 per cent of tuition fees to study in one of RMIT Vietnam's Engineering or IT programs, plus an Ipad Mini 4.

Open to high school students in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, and Vung Tau, the TechGenius 2016 competition challenged student teams to propose, design, test, present and demonstrate their engineering and IT-related projects.

The design and implementation of their projects was achieved under the supervision of a high school teacher and the RMIT TechGenius Project Supervisory Team.

Head of RMIT Vietnam’s Centre of Technology Professor Alex Stojcevski said that it’s important for students to embrace science and technology careers, especially at a younger age. 

“Vietnam is projected to grow greatly in the coming years, and much of that growth will be driven by its science and technology sectors.

“We need to prepare students for this future, giving them the skills and knowledge to succeed.

“An event like Techgenius is especially important as it piques the interest of would be scientists and engineers at a younger age.”

According to event organisers, the event aims to create a competitive, fair, and prestigious playground in engineering and IT fields for high school students.


Students presented projects directly related to engineering or information technology such as electrical and electronic engineering, information technology, software engineering, mechatronics and robotics engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Kicked off in late April this year, the competition saw 22 teams from high schools across southern Vietnam participate.

Meet the winning teams at the Technology Experience Day on Sunday 16 October.

1. Best Project Teams:

- First prize: Gia Dinh high school (Project : G-Bot, all climbing robot). Each member receives a scholarship worth 50% of tuition fee towards a program in RMIT Centre of Technology and an Apple iPad mini 4.

- Second prize: Dinh Thien Ly high school (Project: Create a system attached to water heater solar for electricity purpose). Each member receives an Apple iPad Air 2.

- Third prize: Nguyen Thuong Hien high school (Project: Make water from Air). Each member receives an Apple iPad Mini 4.

2. Best Innovative Project: Le Hong Phong high school for the gifted (Project: A system to convert sign language into text by identifying hand gesture). The prize is awarded to a Project Team whose project has the highest potential to make a positive and significant impact on the community, environment, and future technology. Each member receives an Apple iPad Mini 4.

3. Best High School: Gia Dinh high school. High school whose Project Team wins the first prize of Best Project Team receives an RMIT TechKit consisting of a projector, a projection screen, and a wireless presenter.
