Student speaks at Global Education Dialogues

RMIT Vietnam student Nguyen Ho Thao Nguyen recently presented on the issue of student employability at the British Council’s well-known policy dialogue forum.

As part of a class project, the Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication) student and four classmates prepared an integrated marketing communication plan for UNESCO-CEP Vietnam’s nation-wide project on Vietnamese youth and their job-readiness.

“We conducted a survey of 170 Vietnamese university students and found that self-efficacy is imperative for successful labour integration,” Nguyen said.

According to the survey, the development of character and skills was more important than the acquisition of knowledge when it comes to being ready for work.

Nguyen explained that her former lecturer, Dr Nguyen Thi Nhai, introduced them to the forum after seeing similarities between their class project and the topic for this year’s Global Education Dialogues—Innovation and Employability: University – Industry partnership for sustainable economic development.

Nguyen was honoured to have her team’s project nominated for a presentation and as the core discussion topic for around 130 delegates including government, industry and higher education leaders, and researchers and practitioners from the UK, Vietnam and ASEAN countries.

“This was a great opportunity for me to network, expand my relationships, sharpen my skills and learn about the challenges and opportunities facing international higher education,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen’s presentation was followed by panel discussion under the umbrella topic University-industry partnerships – how to make it successful.

The team’s project will be cited in the forthcoming educational book Higher education reform in Vietnam: Global labour and the demand of local business.

The other team members include RMIT Vietnam Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication) students Phan Le Ngoc Han, Trinh Kim Tuyet, Nguyen Thi To Sa, and Tran Nguyen Anh Linh.
