RMIT Vietnam graduate Duong Khanh Nhu has swapped university life for one which nurtures her love of hand-crafted products.

“The best thing about my job is that I love what I’m doing,” Nhu said of her role as Business Development Manager at Nguyen Khang Shoe Company Ltd, a position she started after graduating with a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) degree.

“Since I was a little girl, I have always been interested in hand-crafted products. I used to make bracelets, hair ties and little toys for children using paper, plastic cups and straws.”

“I also have a huge passion for shoes,” she continued, “especially leather shoes and sneakers. So, when I got the opportunity to work for a footwear manufacturing company, my dream came true. It’s a perfect combination of my hobbies.”

Speaking of the industry in general, Nhu said that she still saw huge opportunity in the footwear sector in Vietnam.

“Nowadays, Vietnamese retailers are looking to support domestic products, rather than cheaper versions from China or elsewhere,” she said.

“Also, our key target market, middle to upper class consumers, is increasing significantly, and Vietnamese buyers are more willing to spend on luxury products now.”

Nhu explained that it was a good time to be in the business, with limited competition meaning her company was confident of achieving its financial goals.

Reflecting on her journey to this point in her career, Nhu was thankful for her experiences at RMIT Vietnam.

“To be honest, RMIT has completely changed my life in some ways,” she said.

“I am more confident to communicate with foreign customers and suppliers in English about the products we sell, the leathers we want to source or the customer service we are able to deliver.

“RMIT taught me to generate, interpret and analyse information effectively, and to get this job, I followed exactly what I was taught in the Career Centre’s CV writing and interview tips workshops.”

Happy that she has followed a passion and is living her preferred job choice, Nhu recommends that students “make the most out of their student life at University”.

“Jump out of your comfort zone and do the things you love; either you succeed or fail, but you will learn anyway,” she said.
