Alumni share design career highlights at creative showcase

Four RMIT Vietnam alumni showed off their multimedia chops at the University’s annual Creative Showcase.

Held at RMIT Vietnam’s Saigon South and Hanoi City campuses, the exhibition highlighted student work in design, communication and fashion.

The alumni included Chau Chan Quyen, senior art director at TBWA; Bui Nguyen Dieu An from YOLO Pictures; Trieu Dinh Nam, the founder of ZOOMATIONS; and Phuong Tran, producer and partner at May Productions.

Quyen, a 2011 graduate in Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Systems), began working in the advertising industry right after completing his studies, and recently started at TBWA. “The daily work we do is mostly producing advertising campaign ideas, strategies for marketing trends and so on,” he said.

He highlighted the strengths which his courses at RMIT Vietnam helped build. “I believe that during my time studying at RMIT I developed conceptual thinking a lot,” he shares.

“This was a very big advantage for me when I stepped out into the industry. Having those more advanced conceptual thinking skills brought me up the ladder a little bit faster in my career path.”

Quyen’s exhibit at the showcase portrayed his involvement in a marketing campaign organised by Heineken.

“They held a Heineken Talent Lab where they select the best creatives from around the world to go to Amsterdam to develop a campaign for moderate drinking,” he explains.

He was chosen after submitting a portfolio to Heineken Vietnam, and went to the Netherlands. “The project’s beauty is that we could actually use design solutions and change behaviour with very small ideas,” Quyen shares.

As part of the campaign he, along with other participants, talked to bar patrons and eventually developed a system where people could pour themselves a cup of water while waiting for their beer at the bar.

“This can reduce the alcohol level and let them enjoy the Heineken more responsibly,” Quyen elaborates.

Nam, from ZOOMATIONS, also graduated in 2011 after studying Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Systems). He worked as a producer at YANTV at first, and eventually decided to strike out on his own and create a company.

ZOOMATIONS, his brainchild, specialises in filming sporting events in Vietnam such as the Colour Me Run, Da Nang IRONMAN and Challenge Vietnam triathlon in Nha Trang. Examples of their productions were screened during the showcase.

“I love playing sports and now most of my work is related to sports,” he shares.

However, Nam hopes to expand in the future. “The company was just created two years ago, so I want to improve and get more people onto the team,” he says. “I want to improve my directing and producing and one day create a TV show or feature film.”
