Business alumni experience challenges and thrills of United Nations

Two RMIT Vietnam alumni were among ten overseas Vietnamese students who attended the 2016 Harvard National Model United Nationals (HNMUN) in Boston, USA.

More than 3,000 students, many from prestigious schools, came from over 70 countries and gathered at the HNMUN to experience the challenges and thrills of international diplomacy by assuming the roles of UN representatives and other international decision-makers.

Bachelor of Business (Business Information Systems) graduate Nguyen Nam Toan said he learned a lot while serving on the legal panel representing Guinea.

“The conference gave me insight into the latest international political trends as well as the varying world issues,” Toan said.

“Before the conference I was given two topics to research: Universal Jurisdiction and Torture; and then I had to write a one-page summary of each topic and present my opinions.

“I also participated on a working paper with other international teams to write up a working solution on the Universal Jurisdiction on International Law – how criminals should be handled if currently residing in another country.”

The HNMUN offered a unique opportunity for delegates to push their boundaries in negotiation, public speaking, lobbying, and resolution writing.

Tran Le Hoang, another Bachelor of Business (Business Information Systems) graduate, was placed on the Disarmament International Security Committee, and challenged to form an opinion about “The Future of State Boundaries in the Middle East”.

“My viewpoint was to establish strong cooperation between Middle Eastern countries, a collaboration based on maintaining borders and training programs,” Hoang said.

Toan and Hoang, both scholarship students at the University College Dublin – Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Ireland, had to pass a challenging selection round before being admitted into the conference.

Toan is currently studying for a Master of Strategic Management and Planning degree while Hoang is pursuing a Master of Digital Innovation degree, both scheduled to finish in September.

HNMUN is the largest and oldest conference of its kind offering an opportunity for students all over the globe to experience the workings of the United Nations.
