Building a career as a consultant in international business

Taking a master’s degree while working full time is no easy task, but for current MIB student Vu Tran Khanh Ngoc, it was a necessity to accelerate her career as an international business consultant. Thus far, she has labeled her experiences in the program as ‘revolutionary.’

It wasn't long after her graduation from a Bachelor of International Business degree at RMIT, that Vu Tran Khanh Ngoc decided that she wished to continue her educational journey. Already working full-time as a consultant at KPMG, Ngoc made the decision to join RMIT’s Master of International Business program.

“Supporting my work at KPMG was paramount,” Ngoc relates. “I wanted to understand the market more and leverage networking and knowledge-sharing from my peers and from those in different industries. Learning about new disruptions and trends was also top of my list.”

Ngoc says there were two major deciding factors that led to her choosing RMIT for her master’s degree. The first was the University’s faculty and staff. “I consider that these are the lecturers who made me who I am today,” Ngoc confides, “RMIT lecturers care about our personal development not just our academic development.” Specifically, Ngoc notes that it is Dr. Trung Nguyen, Associate Professor and Head of Department for Management, who had the most influence on her. “Dr. Trung is highly passionate and knowledgeable, and he has always been able to give me in-depth thoughts about how to do business in Vietnam.”

The second reason Ngoc chose RMIT was that she wished to work and study at same time, thus allowing her to learn and apply that knowledge immediately to her job. The flexibility to do both has even led Ngoc to a promotion, becoming a Senior Consultant in Deal Advisory, Strategy.

Now beginning her 3rd semester, Ngoc has had some surprising discoveries thus far in the program. Notably, as she shares, that taking the International Logisitics course, taught by Dr. Eckart changed her mindset tremendously when it comes to viewing supply chain in business.  “My department at work does not offer supply chain consulting, so at first I was not entirely enthusiastic to join this class,” Ngoc admits. “But after studying that course it changed my view completely – I now understand that supply chain is a backbone for every business when they are operating in Vietnam, especially when they want to bring their manufacturing process into the country. Dr. Eckart discussed a lot about the tradeoffs that occur in logistics, which is something that I had never thought of before. He helped me understand the opportunity costs that occur between logistics costs and logistics efficiency.”

The networking that Ngoc has been able to do within the program has been beneficial as well, ash she has made friends with people in industries and fields she never thought she would meet before, including one classmate in the pesticide business as well as those who work in embassies. The eclectic blend of students from different backgrounds has given Ngoc new awareness, and, as she states, “has helped me pick up new concepts and theories quickly, due to their different viewpoints and expertise in numerous industries.”

Ngoc feels quite strongly about the transformations she’s experienced since beginning her MIB, going as far to say that her degree has been ‘revolutionary’ to her previous ways of thinking and working.
