RMIT Accessibility Design Competition is on

If you're keen on innovative ideas in the forms of design or prototype to promote inclusiveness for people with disabilities in the workplace, the RMIT Accessibility Design Competition (ADC) is for you.

First launched in 2020, the annual event provides a collaborative space for students to work with industry partners to learn and challenge themselves in how to be inclusive in their thinking and action, connect with and shadow senior industry partners from different fields and multinational corporations, and team up with them to get a chance to win valuables prizes.

This year’s competition is scaled up to regionwide with the participation of students from Southeast Asia and beyond.

Students from all programs can participate and access a range of workshops, mentoring sessions and nurture their skills from ideation to design or prototype.

The competition is now up and will run for two months and give the participants a chance to cultivate an inclusive mindset, make use of problem-solving skills and learn about different perspectives.

At the competition launch, the insightful speeches delivered by the representatives from Disability Research and Capacity Development (DRD) reinforced the need for inclusive design, workplaces, and education. The topics ranged from infrastructural barriers for wheelchair users to inaccessible education and employment for people with hearing and visual impairment.

Chairman of HR Committee of World Bank’s Vietnam Business Forum and a member of the ADC judging panel, Mr Colin Blackwell underscored the transformative changes that AI and technology can bring to the competition.

“This is actually creating real-world solutions that have a very high chance of working,” Mr Blackwell said.

“Teams can now build something as complex as Facebook in a couple of hours with the assistance of technology.”

Member of HDK team and winner of 2022 ADC, Nguyen Xuan Hieu was impressed with the competition and highly appreciated the knowledge and skills he acquired from it.

“ADC created a meaningful and realistic competition on a large scale for us to develop and execute ideas into reality to reach consumers and create values for the community and society,” Hieu said.

“After the competition, our team learned a lot about soft skills and gained more knowledge about business. The knowledge and experience were valuable to us.”
