RMIT Fintech Blockchain Competition 2022 calls for sustainable ideas

Now open for registration, the second annual RMIT Fintech Blockchain Competition 2022 welcomes high school and university students who are passionate about fintech and blockchain in Vietnam.

The competition, organised by RMIT School of Business & Management in collaboration with the RMIT FinTech-Crypto Hub and RMIT Vietnam FinTech Club, aims to create an academic playground that expands the frontiers of knowledge and skills in fintech / blockchain technologies for young Vietnamese people. This is an opportunity for the youth to experiment, learn and create practical and highly applicable technology solutions.

The inaugural RMIT Fintech Blockchain Competition was a great success with many projects of high potential and impact. This year, the competition has returned with a new theme – “Powering a Sustainable World with Fintech and Blockchain”, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The organisers have identified five SDGs as the main theme for the competition:

  • SDG 1 – No poverty
  • SDG 2 – Zero hunger
  • SDG 4 – Quality education
  • SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth, and
  • SDG 13 – Climate action
news-2-en-rmit-fintech-blockchain-competition-calls-for-sustainable-ideas The RMIT Fintech Blockchain Competition 2022 calls for solutions to five Sustainable Development Goals that are of utmost importance not only for Vietnam but for the whole world.

RMIT Dean of School of Business & Management Professor Robert McClelland said: “The mission of the competition is to inspire university and high school students in Vietnam to think about how fintech and blockchain are disrupting our world, and how they can create their own innovative business ideas in these emerging areas.”

In 2021 and 2022, besides the developments of the pandemic, we have witnessed the leaps and bounds of the fintech sector in Vietnam with many technology companies emerging from various fields such as finance, education and real estate. At the same time, the blockchain technology has gradually penetrated the Vietnamese market with positive development outlook.

What if the young generation could apply these resources to solve the sustainability issues raised by the United Nations, helping to improve the quality of life for people in Vietnam as well as across the world?

That is the challenge posed for this year's contestants. They will be asked to research different practical aspects, uncover existing social problems related to the selected SDGs, propose solutions, and prove the feasibility of such solutions.

Each team of 2-5 members can attend two training workshops to finalise their proposals. The top six teams will then have two weeks to work with mentors who are experts in the fintech / blockchain field. Next, they will present their projects in front of the judges in the final round and have the opportunity to bring home prizes with a total value of up to 150 million VND.

Associate Professor Nguyen Vu Hong Thai, Head of Economics & Finance Department at RMIT School of Business & Management, said: “This competition is a great opportunity to enhance students’ knowledge and practical skills in tackling real-world problems.”

“I am excited for the competition to move forward and to start seeing innovative solutions from the youth for some of the world’s most difficult challenges,” he added.
