RMIT international forum attracts global speakers and change leaders

More than 40 international guest speakers and change leaders gathered at RMIT University’s Global Leadership Forum, held in both Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City in November to help foster connectivity among students aspiring to be future leaders.

More than 360 RMIT students travelled to attend the forums from Vietnam, Australia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Singapore.

The speakers represented notable international brands including EY, L’Oréal, P&G, Intel, Schneider Electric, and UNICEF, and addressed RMIT students through a series of talks and interactive sessions.

Participants got to develop their understanding of some of the most pressing issues that leaders face today, such as technology disruptions, workforce transformation and sustainability.

According to Manager, Global Experiences at RMIT Kate Rintoul, the Global Leadership Forum is a platform for students to develop the key skills they will need to succeed in today’s world - cultural intelligence and global leadership.

“We want to help students forge meaningful connections and be inspired to tackle the big issues of our times, issues that affect their local community and the world,” she said.

The one-day forums were delivered by Common Purpose – a UK-based not-for-profit that specialises in cross-boundary leadership development.

“For students who cannot travel, they can get the benefit of global learning right on their home campus through these onsite events or our free online course Be CQ Ready,” Ms Rintoul added.

Around 500 students attended each Global Leadership Forum. Around 500 students attended each Global Leadership Forum.

In a closing poll, participants were asked to describe their biggest takeaway from the day in one word. Inspiration, motivation and confidence were among the top answers.

“The sessions were a great chance to network and hone my critical thinking. They gave me a better idea of how to become a leader,” said Kathy Kim, a Tourism & Hospitality Management student from the Saigon South campus who attended both forums in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City.

“This was my first time joining any global leadership program and I’d highly recommend it. It’s a rewarding experience to break out of your comfort zone, open your minds and make new friends,” Kim said.
