RMIT Vietnam wins 2018 Duty of Care Award

RMIT University Vietnam has been awarded the 2018 Duty of Care Award for best practices in mitigating travel, health and security risks.

Specifically, the award recognises the University’s efforts to enhance the experience and safety of its international students.

The award was presented on 17 May at the International SOS Foundation Global Duty of Care Summit in Chicago, USA.

RMIT Vietnam had been shortlisted in the awards’ Education category along with thirteen other educational institutions from around the world.

RMIT Vietnam President Professor Gael McDonald accepted the prize and said she was delighted that the University’s International Student Support Program had been acknowledged.

“Students who choose to study at RMIT Vietnam join a global community comprised of 45 nationalities. We take great pride in ensuring our international students receive the support they need to thrive in this community,” said Professor McDonald.

“Our support program begins the moment students accept the offer to study at RMIT Vietnam, and continues throughout their studies.”

International students studying at RMIT Vietnam benefit from many support services, including the Buddy Program, which matches them with Vietnamese friends. With the support of the University, these friends become an on-the-ground support system from the moment an international student arrives.

The University also organises social activities to help international students build connections and friendships. These include community trips, festivals and weekly language and culture exchange workshops.

Other aspects of the International Student Support Program judged by the Duty of Care Awards include the University’s health insurance, emergency hotline and pastoral care, and international-standard on-campus medical assistance.

The Duty of Care Award is given out by the International SOS Foundation. According to their website, duty of care refers to the moral and legal obligations that employers have to their workforce to maintain their wellbeing, security and safety at home and abroad.
