Teachers awarded for preparing students for life and work

Three outstanding teachers have won the RMIT Vietnam 2018 Excellence in Learning and Teaching Award for their exceptional contributions to student learning.

During her opening remarks at the award ceremony, RMIT Vietnam Vice President (Academic) Professor Beverley Webster said that teaching today is an honour and a privilege – as well as an incredible responsibility – and these awards celebrate RMIT teachers who are rising to this challenge.

“These teachers are devoted to their students, conscientious about their practice, and reliably effective at helping students get ready for the world that awaits them,” said Professor Webster.

One of the awards was presented to Dr Burkhard Schrage, a lecturer from the Department of Management, School of Business & Management, for successfully designing learning experiences that develop work-ready students.

“Dr Schrage’s focus on developing students’ employability skills is evidenced in the design of authentic learning and assessment activities in his courses which stem from his active connections to local industry,” said Head of School of Communication & Design Professor Rick Bennett, who presented the awards.

“In his teaching he has a focus on increasing student motivation and engagement through a wide range of evidence-based, student-centred approaches, including implementing blended learning in his course to enable active learning in face-to-face sessions.”

Professor Bennett shared that Dr Schrage can always be seen consulting with students, individually or in groups, providing feedback and guidance on how to improve, even outside of class hours.

The two other awardees are both from the Department of Design, School of Communication & Design.

Professor Bennett noted that the second award winner, Acting Discipline Lead of the Department of Design Khoa Trong Nguyen, is driven by his desire for students to develop practical skills through learning activities that are based on his strong command of the discipline.

“This teacher has had a great impact in the design of courses within his program, ensuring that students not only gain technical knowledge, but also the industry skills relevant to their field,” Professor Bennett said of Mr Nguyen, who has been at RMIT Vietnam for ten years.

“Outside of the classroom, he has leveraged his industry connections and leadership skills to build a creative and inspiring learning environment that positively impacts student work.”

The third award was presented to Associate Lecturer Ondris Pui, who has spent eight years at RMIT Vietnam.

Professor Bennett said that Mr Pui has established himself as a leader in his specific discipline.

“He has had a significant impact on student learning in a fast-emerging and cutting-edge field [augmented reality and virtual reality technology],” Professor Bennett said.

“Through research and professional interaction, he has developed future focused learning experiences and contributed to learning in this field both in Vietnam and abroad.

“He has created opportunities for students to present their creative works on campus and in the community.”

The three award winners will also have the opportunity to apply for an RMIT Global Teaching Award in the future.
