1371 RMIT Vietnam students graduate with pride at two campuses

More than 1300 graduands have walked proudly across the stage in four ceremonies in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to collect a testamur for their newly-acquired academic degrees.

The largest group of graduates was 459 students receiving their Bachelor of Business degrees, followed by Bachelor of Commerce (223), and Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication) (93).

This year, the University also saw a large group of graduates (95) who were conferred masters degrees including Master of Business Administration and Master of International Business.

RMIT Vietnam President Professor Gael McDonald congratulated the new graduates on their achievement and commented on the University’s commitment to Vietnam.

“RMIT Vietnam has been growing and developing, ensuring that our range of programs continues to reflect the needs of industry and that our teaching is of the highest quality,” she said.

“Our commitment to Vietnam remains central to our operation. In 2017, we have introduced a number of new programs which will contribute significantly to the development of the country. New programs include bachelor’s degrees in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Design Studies, Digital Marketing, and Languages.

“To foster the rapidly-growing spirit of entrepreneurship in Vietnam, we also will soon introduce a Graduate Certificate in Business Start ups. More new programs will follow in 2018,” Professor McDonald added.

A highlight of this year’ ceremonies was the conferring of Honorary Doctorates on Mr Don Lam, Madame Ton Nu Thi Ninh and Mr Nguyen Xuan Vang for their distinguished contributions to the community. The recipients have also demonstrated that they align with the values and character of RMIT University.

Mr Don Lam, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of VinaCapital, is one of Vietnam’s top authorities on investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, and privatisations.

Mr Lam set up the VinaCapital Foundation which has a mission to empower the children and youth of Vietnam by providing opportunities for growth through health and education projects. Over the past ten years, the Foundation has provided lifesaving surgeries for nearly 6000 children in Vietnam, equipped hospitals and clinics with essential emergency equipment, trained thousands of medical professionals, and provided scholarships to ethnic minorities.

Madame Ton Nu Thi Ninh received an Honorary Doctorate from Deputy Chancellor of RMIT University, Ms Janet Latchford.

Madame Ton Nu Thi Ninh is the President of Ho Chi Minh City Peace and Development Foundation, and Former Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Vietnam National Assembly.

Madame Ninh served as a career diplomat specialising in global issues (international peace and security, development, environment, governance and human rights) and multilateral institutions before being elected to Vietnam’s National Assembly where she continued to actively work to build bridges of understanding and cooperation between Vietnam and the world, and in particular to highlight the National Assembly’s integral role in Vietnam’s Doi Moi (Reform and Renewal) and democratisation.

Today, as a much sought after public speaker and advocate of diverse socio-cultural, educational and international topics both in and outside Vietnam, she pursues her lifelong commitment to Vietnam’s sustainable development and integration with the world.

Bachelor of Business (International Business) graduate Mai Duc Hieu received the President’s Award from Ms Janet Latchford.

Mr Nguyen Xuan Vang is former Director General, Vietnam International Education Cooperation Department, Ministry of Education and Training.

After serving two terms as the President of Hanoi University of Foreign Studies, Mr Vang made outstanding contributions to transition it to Hanoi University, which was the first Vietnamese university to offer full curricula in English from 2002.

He then worked at the Ministry of Education and Training in 2008 where he served as Director General of Vietnam International Education Development, followed by the International Cooperation Department, and recently the Vietnam International Education Cooperation Department.

Mr Nguyen Xuan Vang received an Honorary Doctorate from Deputy Chancellor of RMIT University, Ms Janet Latchford.

Bachelor of Business (International Business) graduate Duong Hong Nhung received the President’s Award from Professor Gael McDonald.

RMIT Vietnam’s prestigious President’s Awards were conferred on outstanding Bachelor of Business (International Business) graduates Mai Duc Hieu and Duong Hong Nhung, who graduated with distinction and impressive achievements outside their studies. Hieu was also awarded the Outstanding Graduates Award for achieving the highest GPA (3.9/4.0) in his degree.
