New tourism and hospitality program targets growing market

RMIT University Vietnam has launched a new Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management program at events in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi on 15 January 2017.

“The growing tourism and hospitality industry in Vietnam is generating a strong demand for professionals with leadership and management skills, and cultural awareness,” said Associate Professor Nkhoma, Head of the Centre of Commerce and Management, at the launch at the University’s Saigon South campus.

“The National Tourism Development Strategy estimates that the tourism sector will require three million workers by 2020. Twenty-five per cent of this number, or 750,000, will need a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hospitality, and of that number approximately 55,000 will work at a managerial level or higher.”

“RMIT Vietnam’s new Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management program will help the country fill this need, especially the requirement for managerial and leadership roles.”

Associate Professor Nkhoma added that the program will enable students to become part of a generation of leaders who can work effectively in both international and local organisations.

“The 24 courses of study over three years reflect international standards and a global outlook, while also staying connected to our communities through localised content and practical experience.”

The program, which was benchmarked across leading tourism and hospitality programs in Switzerland, the US and Australia, stands out from other degrees as students benefit from a 3-month flagship industry internship in their final semester.

“This internship further develops relevant practical skills, aids understanding of industry requirements, and helps fast-track a successful career path,” Associate Professor Nkhoma explained.

“Our students also develop the soft skills and specific career-focused attributes vital for success in this exciting industry.”

Associate Professor Nkhoma emphasised the importance of connecting students to industry throughout their student journey.

“We have established strong partnerships with local and overseas industry including InterContinental Hotels Group, Sheraton Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Alma Group Vietnam, and Buffalo Tours Vietnam,” he said.

“RMIT Vietnam’s Tourism and Hospitality Management graduates will be work-ready and have skills that are highly sought after locally and globally, and in diverse areas including tourism, travel and hospitality, sport and leisure, festivals and exhibitions, destination marketing, and business development.”

The University will welcome the first intake at Saigon South campus in February and at Hanoi campus in October 2017. For further information regarding the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, please visit this page.
