Experienced leader to head up Centre of Commerce and Management

Associate Professor Mathews Nkhoma has been appointed Head of Centre for RMIT Vietnam’s Centre of Commerce and Management.

A senior academic with a distinguished track record of academic leadership at RMIT Vietnam since 2010, Associate Professor Nkhoma said that he was excited to take up the opportunity to oversee all academic and business operations in the Centre of Commerce and Management.

“Vietnam is growing and that’s why I want to be part of it,” Associate Professor Nkhoma said.

“I want to make sure that we contribute to the government’s agenda and initiatives.”

Associate Professor Nkhoma led the establishment of the RMIT Vietnam Cyber Security and Logistics Lab. Associate Professor Nkhoma led the establishment of the RMIT Vietnam Cyber Security and Logistics Lab.

One of Associate Professor Nkhoma’s responsibilities is to continue the Centre’s positive impact on Vietnam and the Southeast Asia region.

“Our vision is to become the best business school in Southeast Asia through teaching and learning that transforms students, research that impacts public policy, and industry engagement that ensures our students are work-ready,” he said.

“I am going to create excellence in learning and teaching by ensuring a trending curriculum, as well as by applying digital technology.”

Speaking on his vision for research, Associate Professor Nkhoma said: “I want to do research that is relevant to Vietnam so that the industry and government can utilise our findings.”

“I’ve done it already in terms of developing case studies to make sure that our graduates are ready in solving business problems.”

Regarding his third priority area – industry engagement – Associate Professor Nkhoma said he will continue to build on the University’s strong industry connections to ensure learning is integrated with work at every stage of the student journey.

“We want to further align our programs with future workforce demands,” he said.

“We will partner with local business, the chamber of commerce, industry, government institutions and NGOs,” he explained.

Before being appointed Head of Centre, Associate Professor Nkhoma served as Head of Department (Management, Business IT, Logistics and Law) from 2012 to 2016. During this time, he has made a significant impact in implementing innovative teaching approaches, introducing new needs-responsive course offerings, and developing and hosting several well-received academic conferences.

Associate Professor Nkhoma began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of East London, and has since held teaching, research and leadership appointments at Al Ghurair University and University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, as well as at RMIT Vietnam.

In nearly a decade of teaching, he has facilitated student learning in a wide range of subjects at post-graduate and undergraduate levels, consistently earning positive reviews from students.

Associate Professor Nkhoma is a respected academic in the areas of commerce and management. His work has appeared in academic journals in Australia, Germany, UAE, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa, the UK, and the US.

Associate Professor Nkhoma has a successful track record of securing research funding including three RMIT University Program Development grants and five RMIT University research grants – totalling over $300,000. He has also supported junior academics in their efforts to secure grant funding.
