RMIT student wins prestigious Roger Hatchuel Academy scholarship

Bachelor of Design student Tran Le Bao Quan has earned a trip to Cannes Lions 2017 in France to kickstart her career in the competitive advertising industry.

Bao Quan was presented with the Roger Hatchuel Academy scholarship at an award ceremony for the celebrated Vietnam Young Lions Competition, a part of the annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Bao Quan will now represent Vietnam at the coveted five-day training course at Roger Hatchuel Academy, where she can expect to learn from industry leaders, marketing luminaries, and some of the world’s most celebrated creatives.

The intensive course is renowned for helping students of advertising, communications and other creative disciplines kickstart their careers in the competitive industry.

Quan could not hold back the excitement as she spoke about the scholarship: “I did not prepare myself for winning at all. It was like an explosion inside of me when I heard my name announced on the stage.”

Quan later shared that she learned about the scholarship opportunity late in the competition. However, she tried her best to prepare a design portfolio that showcased her rich experience – despite being a student – and her focused determination to become a creative director in the near future.

That helped Quan get shortlisted in the top three of the competition, along with fellow Bachelor of Design students Tran Thi Thao Nguyen and Truong Hoang Nhan, and eventually win the coveted creative academy scholarship.

“We are very delighted with the level of the work and the confidence of all contestants, especially Bao Quan’s,” said Professor Rick Bennett, RMIT Vietnam Head of the Centre of Communication & Design, and Chairman of the VYL 2017 Jury (Students’ category), as he presented the award to Quan.

“This is the first time RMIT Vietnam joined this competition and we look forward to having more talented students participate next year.”

With this scholarship, Bao Quan will now join 34 other students from around the world in Cannes, France from 18 to 23 June 2017 to attend the program led by Clive Challis, Head of the Advertising Course at Central Saint Martins, a globally respected art and design school in London.

Notably, academy students will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the jury process, which are closed to all other attendees of the Festival, to learn what makes great creative work and how to generate ideas better and faster. They also get full access to the Cannes Lions, including the five Award Shows and the Young Lions Party.

“I hope to immerse myself not only in the practical knowledge of the creativity process but also of advertising, communications and marketing. I hope after five days, I will grow more capable of pursuing my dream career,” the final-year Design student shared.

A photography enthusiast, Quan also said that she wanted to take this opportunity to capture the city’s scenes from her own perspective and translate them into great visual language.
