RMIT Vietnam facilitates discussion on open educational resources

More than 50 library managers and education leaders from across Vietnam recently gathered at RMIT Vietnam’s Seminar on Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Digital Repositories.

RMIT Vietnam Library Manager Ms Clare O’Dwyer said the University welcomed the opportunity to facilitate a discussion on a topic that was so pertinent to educational institutions in Vietnam and around the world.

“We hope this seminar can facilitate sharing, conversations, and collaboration between RMIT Vietnam Library and Vietnamese universities in the emerging areas of open educational resources and open repositories,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

Open educational resources are open licensed materials that are used for teaching, learning, and research, and are freely accessible to all.

The participants discussed a range of topics including MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and open scholarship.

The event included presentations by Mr Frank Ponte, Manager Library Liaison, College of Science, Engineering and Health, and Ms Anne Lennox, Senior Coordinator, Copyright, Digitisation and Repositories – both from RMIT University in Melbourne.

Dr Le Trung Nghia, Chairman of the Advisory Council of National Centre for Research and Development of Open Technologies (RDOT), highly appreciated the event as it raised awareness of open access resources amongst Vietnam’s academic community.

Dr Nghia also suggested RMIT Vietnam Library to actively participate in the forthcoming annual conference of open academic resources to be organised by the Government of Vietnam.

Ms Thai Thi Thanh Thuy, Hoa Sen University Library Manager, also acknowledged the growing significance of open educational resources in Vietnam’s universities.

“I reckon we should organise similar events at Hoa Sen University to raise awareness [of this topic] for our academics.

“We would like to invite RMIT Vietnam Library colleagues to Hoa Sen for experience sharing if possible.”

The first of its kind for RMIT Vietnam, the seminar was held at both Saigon South and Hanoi campuses.
