Fashion Colloquia a chance to connect and learn

Over two hundred fashion aficionados from around the world converged on RMIT Vietnam’s Saigon South campus last week to examine the current state and future directions of Vietnam’s fashion industry.

The three-day Producing Fashion: Made in Vietnam event provided opportunities for delegates to connect with each other and gain insight into the growing industry.

The event’s three main themes of creativityconnecting with industry, and growing the future were designed to open up conversations about opportunities for fashion in Vietnam.

The delegates came from as close as Ho Chi Minh City and as far as the USA, and consisted of students, academics, and industry professionals.

“Already, after just one day of the conference, I have learned an immeasurable amount about the history of fashion in Vietnam. There is no way I could have learned this much about the history, production and consumption of fashion in Vietnam by reading books or researching on my own. This has been an extremely rewarding experience, well-organised and brilliantly executed!”

“Fashion Colloquia gave me a chance to connect with fashion makers and like-minded people.  When I heard the sharing from individuals who had the same vision as me, I could immediately see collaborative opportunities.

Singapore is a very developed economy, but we don’t have many makers; we don’t produce fabrics, and lack a strong manufacturing base. What we have is financing and a global consumer base. I see myself as a connector who could help bring Vietnamese fashion to Singapore and also help it to grow in Asia.”

“I saw Fashion Colloquia as a great opportunity to see and learn more about fashion in another country. Vietnam is a country that is on the rise. I really enjoyed it and was encouraged when I heard different designers speak about how they began, how they struggled at the beginning. I was inspired by Li Lam. I saw myself in her story about how depressed she was after graduation, how she got over it, and how she reached where she is now.”

“I was inspired by all the presenters and their stories. They gave me the idea of how the fashion industry works, that I have to have my signature on my designs, and that I need to have a broad vision while doing business in this industry.

The history of fashion presentation helped me to understand more about the past and it inspired me a lot. I would like to follow in Tran Thien Ha Mi’s footsteps to become a fashion show director and to support local designers.”
